Criticism of Christianity and Christians goes back to the Apostolic age, with the New Testament recording friction between the followers of Jesus and the Pharisees and scribes ( e. g. Mark 7: 1-23 and Matthew 15: 1-20 ).

These groups, along with other Christians opposed to capital punishment, have cited Christ's Sermon on the Mount ( transcribed in Matthew Chapter 5 – 7 ) and Sermon on the Plain ( transcribed in Luke 6: 17 – 49 ).

The word parousia is found in the following verses: Matthew 24: 3, 27, 37, 39 ; 1 Corinthians 15: 23 ; 1 Thessalonians 2: 19 ; 3: 13 ; 4: 15 ; 5: 23 ; 2 Thessalonians 2: 1, 8, 9 ; James 5: 7, 8 ; 2 Peter 1: 16 ; 3: 4, 12 ; 1 John 2: 28.

The only possible exceptions to this are the Great Commission Matthew 28: 16-20, 2 Corinthians 13: 14, and the Comma Johanneum, which many regard as a spurious text passage in First John ( 1 John 5: 7 ) known primarily from the King James Version and some versions of the Textus Receptus but not included in modern critical texts ..

The United Methodist Church also believes that Jesus explicitly repudiated the lex talionis in Matthew 5: 38-39 and abolished the death penalty in John 8: 7.

The Sermon on the Mount ( anglicized from the Matthean Vulgate Latin section title: Sermo in monte ) is a collection of sayings and teachings of Jesus, which emphasizes his moral teaching found in the Gospel of Matthew ( chapters 5, 6 and 7 ).

The Sermon on the Mount is the longest piece of teaching from Jesus in the New Testament, and occupies chapters 5, 6 and 7 of the Gospel of Matthew.

According to most interpretations of Matthew 5: 17, 18, 19, and 20, and most Christian views of the Old Covenant, these new interpretations of the Law and Prophets are not opposed to the Old Testament, which was the position of Marcion, but form Jesus ' new teachings which bring about salvation, and hence must be adhered to, as emphasized in Matthew 7: 24-27 towards the end of the sermon.

The exception for divorce at Matthew 5: 32 in the case of porneia may be a Matthean addition ; it is not present in Luke 16: 18, Mark 10: 11, or 1 Cor 7: 10 – 11 ; and in 1 Cor 7: 12 – 16, Paul gives his own exceptions to Jesus ' teaching.

St Thomas interprets ' You should love your neighbour as yourself ' from Leviticus 19 and Matthew 22 as meaning that love for ourselves is the exemplar of love for others.

The last meal that Jesus shared with his disciples is described in all four canonical Gospels, namely in Matthew 26: 17-30, Mark 14: 12-26, Luke 22: 7-39 and John 13: 1-17: 26.

In Matthew 26: 24-25, Mark 14: 18-21, Luke 22: 21-23 and John 13: 21-30 during the meal, Jesus predicted that one of his Apostles would betray him.

Thus some early copyists changed Matthew 5: 22 from " whosoever is angry with his brother shall be in danger of the judgment " to the watered-down " whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment.

The Synoptic gospels of Mark ( 1: 14 – 20 ), Matthew ( 4: 18 – 22 ), and Luke ( 5: 1 – 11 ) describe how Jesus recruited four of his apostles from the shores of Lake Galilee: the fishermen Simon and his brother Andrew and the brothers John and James.

Examples include Matthew 1: 23, 2: 15 – 18, 3: 3, 21: 42, Mark 1: 2 – 3, 4: 12, Luke 3: 4 – 6, 22: 37, John 2: 17, 12: 15, and notably in Luke 4: 18 – 21 and parallels where Jesus read extensively from Isaiah and makes the claim that the prophecy is fulfilled in the crowds hearing it.

This applies both in breadth of scope-caring for people ( Matthew 25 ) and environmental issues, e. g. environmental health ( Deuteronomy 22. 8 ; 23. 12-14 )-and dynamic motivation, the love of Christ controlling ( 2 Corinthians 5. 14f ) and dealing with the underlying spiritual disease of sin, which shows itself in selfishness and thoughtlessness.

It later led to the federal October 22, 2009 Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr.

The Reformers ( e. g. Puritans ), upholding the doctrine of justification by faith, held that repentance consisted in a change of the whole moral attitude of the mind and soul ( Matthew 13: 15 ; Luke 22: 32 ), and that the divine forgiveness preceded true repentance and confession to God without any reparation of " works.

Matthew Henry ( 18 October 1662 – 22 June 1714 ) was an English commentator on the Bible and Presbyterian minister.
