Schweitzer found many New Testament references to apparently show that 1st-century Christians believed literally in the imminent fulfillment of the promise of the World's ending, within the lifetime of Jesus's original followers, He noted that in the gospel of Mark, Jesus speaks of a " tribulation ", with his coming in the clouds with great power and glory " ( St Mark ), and states when it will happen: " This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled " ( St Matthew, 24: 34 ) ( or, " have taken place " ( Luke 21: 32 )): " All these things shall come upon this generation " ( Matthew 23: 36 ).

In the New Testament e. g. Matthew 1: 1, 1: 18 ; Mark 1: 1 ; John 1: 17 ; 17: 3 ; 9: 22 ; Mark 9: 40 ; Luke 2: 11 ; 22: 2, the word Christ is preceded by Jesus.

While the Gospels of Mark and Matthew begin by calling Jesus both Christ and the Son of God, these are two distinct attributions.

Criticism of Christianity and Christians goes back to the Apostolic age, with the New Testament recording friction between the followers of Jesus and the Pharisees and scribes ( e. g. Mark 7: 1-23 and Matthew 15: 1-20 ).

The term is used by Jesus Christ in the Olivet discourse, according to both the Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of Mark.

When Justin quotes the synoptic Gospels, he tends to do so in a harmonised form, and Helmut Koester and others conclude that Justin must have possessed a Greek harmony text of Matthew, Luke and Mark.

Like Mark ( but unlike Matthew ), the intended audience is the Greek-speaking populations of the region ; it assures readers that Christianity is an international religion, not an exclusively Jewish sect.

Almost all of Mark's content is found in Matthew, and much of Mark is similarly found in Luke.

Additionally, Matthew and Luke have a large amount of material in common that is not found in Mark.

The Gospels of Luke, Matthew and Mark ( known as the Synoptic Gospels ) include many of the same stories, often in the same sequence, and sometimes exactly the same wording.

It hypothesizes that Matthew and Luke each borrowed from both Mark and a hypothetical sayings collection, called Q.

Biblically this does not match three of the Gospel accounts ( Matthew, Luke, and John ) which specifically state the tomb was new and no one had ever been laid inside.

The Bible refers to the denarius as a day's wage for a common laborer ( Matthew 20: 2 ; John 12: 5 ). The value of the denarius is referred to, though perhaps not literally, in the Bible at Revelation 6: 6: " And I heard something like a voice in the center of the four living creatures saying, ' A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius Vulgate: bilibris tritici denario et tres bilibres hordei denario, δηναρίου in the original Greek ; and do not damage the oil and the wine.

There is a broad disagreement over chronology between Matthew, Mark and Luke on one hand and John on the other: all four agree that Jesus ' public ministry began with an encounter with John the Baptist, but Matthew, Mark and Luke follow this with an account of teaching and healing in Galilee, then a trip to Jerusalem where there is an incident in the Temple, climaxing with the crucifixion on the day of the Passover holiday.

In the standard order of the canonical gospels, John is fourth, after the three interrelated synoptic gospels Matthew, Mark and Luke.

In the earliest surviving gospel collection, Papyrus 45 of the 3rd century, it is placed second in the order Matthew, John, Luke and Mark, an order which is also found in other very early New Testament manuscripts.

In the " two-source hypothesis ," Q explains where the authors of Matthew and Luke got the material that they have in common with each other but that is not found in Mark, such as the Lord's prayer.

" Scholars have put forward several theories to explain Papias: perhaps Matthew wrote two gospels, one, now lost, in Hebrew, the other our Greek version ; or perhaps the logia was a collection of sayings rather than the gospel ; or by dialektōi Papias may have meant that Matthew wrote in the Jewish style rather than in the Hebrew language.

The author drew on three primary sources, each representing a distinct community: a hypothetical collection, or several collections, of sayings ( called " Q ", and shared with Luke ); the Gospel of Mark ; and material unique to Matthew ( called " M ", some of which may have originated with Matthew himself ).

Matthew's own Christian community may have called themselves Nazoreans, a sect mentioned by Jerome and others: like Matthew, they maintained a " high Christology " ( i. e., they stressed Jesus ' divine nature over his human-ness ), and did not demand that Gentile Christians observe all the Law.

Matthew may have been influenced by Jewish Christianity, a movement in the first few centuries CE which saw Jesus as the Messiah, but continued to practice Jewish customs and traditions.

Many scholars have argued that Matthew is simply an expanded version of Mark, but it is also a creative reinterpretation of the source, stressing Jesus ' teachings as much as his acts, and making subtle changes in order to stress Jesus ' divine nature – Mark's " young man " who appears at Jesus ' tomb, for example, becomes a radiant angel in Matthew.
