Carl Friedrich Michael Meinhof ( July 23, 1857 – February 11, 1944 ) was a German linguist and one of the first linguists to study African languages.

Carl Meinhof was the great-uncle ( the brother of the grandfather ) of Ulrike Meinhof, a founding member of the German Red Army Faction ( RAF ), a left-wing militant group, which operated in West Germany in 1970s and 1980s.

The Bantuist Meinhof made a major distinction between Bantu and a ' Semi-Bantu ' group which according to him was originally of the unrelated Sudanic stock.

According to Carl Meinhof, the Bantu languages have a total of 22 noun classes called nominal classes ( this notion was introduced by W. H. J.

The RAF was founded in 1970 by Andreas Baader, Gudrun Ensslin, Horst Mahler, and Ulrike Meinhof.

Although Meinhof was not considered to be a leader of the RAF at any time, her involvement in Baader's escape from jail in 1970 and her well-known status as a German journalist led to her name becoming attached to it.

Baader was arrested again in April 1970, but on 14 May 1970 he was freed by Meinhof and others.

On 9 May 1976, Ulrike Meinhof was found dead in her cell, hanging from a rope made from jail towels.

Although Meinhof was not considered to be a leader of the gang at any time, her involvement in Baader's escape from jail in 1970 led to her name becoming attached to it.

In his work, Meinhof looked at the common Bantu languages such as Swahili and Zulu to determine similarities and differences.

Meinhof also examined other African languages, including groups classified at the time as Kordofanian, Bushman, Khoikhoi, and Hamitic.

Meinhof developed a comprehensive classification scheme for African languages.
