* July 20 – Battle of Milazzo: The forces of Giuseppe Garibaldi defeat royal Neapolitan forces near Messina, bringing nearly all of Sicily under Garibaldi's control.

Milazzo ( Sicilian: Milazzu, Latin: Mylae ) is a town ( comune ) and is the third-largest city in the province of Messina, and is one of the most important cities of Sicily.
