The Secretary of Defense, by DOD Directive 5025. 12, 22 August 1989, Standardization of Military and Associated Terminology, has directed its use throughout the Department of Defense to ensure standardization of military and associated terminology to those who need to know.

Only the Secretary of Defense ( or the President ) can authorize the transfer of operational control of forces between the three Military Departments ( Departments of the Army, Navy & Air Force ) and the currently nine Combatant Commands ( Africa Command, Central Command, European Command, Northern Command, Pacific Command, Southern Command, Special Operations Command, Strategic Command, Transportation Command ), and between the Combatant Commands.

The Act split the War Department into the Department of the Army and the Department of the Air Force, each with their own Secretary, and created a sui generis National Military Establishment led by a Secretary of Defense.

To address this and other problems, the National Security Act was amended in 1949 to further consolidate the national defense structure in order to reduce interservice rivalry, directly subordinate the Secretaries of the Army, the Navy and the Air Force to the Secretary of Defense in the chain of command, and rename the National Military Establishment to the Department of Defense as one Executive Department.

Furthermore, the Secretary has several statutory responsibilities under the Uniform Code of Military Justice ( UCMJ ) with respect to the administration of the military justice system for the Navy & the Marine Corps, including the authority to convene general courts-martial and to commute sentences.

The Act merged the Department of War and the Department of the Navy into the National Military Establishment, headed by the Secretary of Defense.

Mao was passed over for the position of General Secretary by Zhang Wentian, but gained enough influence to be elected one of three members of Military Affairs Commission.

Although the jobs of Commander-in-Chief and Military Member were now held by same person, senior officers could approach only the Commander-in-Chief directly – they still had to deal with the Military Member through the Army Secretary, who reported to the Indian Government and had right of access to the Viceroy-there were even instances, when the two separate bureaucracies produced different answers to a problem, of the Commander-in-Chief disagreeing with himself as Military Member!

Young Memorial Lecture at Royal Military College of Canada and other activities by the Young Memorial Visitor honour the memory of 2360 Major John Douglas ( Doug ) Young ( RMC 1937 ) who was killed in action on D-Day, as well as his father, the late Maj .- Gen. James V. Young ( RMC 1911 ).

After Grant's victory at Chattanooga earned him promotion to general-in-chief of the U. S. Army, Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman assumed command of Grant's Military Division of the Mississippi, which controlled all Union armies in the West.

The man in command of the Military Division of West Mississippi, and as such the man whom Farragut would have to work with in planning the attack on Mobile, was Maj. Gen. Edward Richard Sprigg Canby, a career soldier.

Sherman, replacing Grant in his role as commander of the Military Division of the Mississippi, who would advance from Chattanooga, Tennessee, to Atlanta.

Both are named after Maj. General Enoch H. Crowder, an officer in the United State Military who was born and raised near the park.
