In the Hebrew Bible and the Qur ' an, Aaron ( or ; Ahărōn, Hārūn, Greek ( Septuagint ): Ααρών ), who is often called "' Aaron the Priest "' () and once Aaron the Levite () ( Exodus 4: 14 ), was the older brother of Moses, ( Exodus 6: 16-20, 7: 7 ; Qur ' an 28: 34 ) and a prophet of God.

While Moses was receiving his education at the Egyptian royal court, and during his exile among the Midianites, Aaron and his sister Miriam remained with their kinsmen in the eastern border-land of Egypt ( Goshen ).

The principal one gives a detailed statement that soon after the incident at Meribah, Aaron, with his son Eleazar and Moses, ascended Mount Hor.

There Moses stripped Aaron of his priestly garments and transferred them to Eleazar.

The other account is found in Deuteronomy 10: 6, where Moses is reported as saying that Aaron died at Moserah and was buried there.

Aaron ’ s function included the duties of speaker and implied personal dealings with the Egyptian royal court on behalf of Moses.

It was during the prolonged absence of Moses that Aaron yielded to the clamors of the people, and made a Golden Calf as a visible image of the divinity who had delivered them from Egypt ( Exodus 32: 1-6 ).

( It should be noted that in the account given of the same events, in rabbinic sources ( b. Talmud Shabbat 99a ; Exodus Rabbah 41 ) and in the Qur ' an, Aaron is not the idol-maker and upon Moses ' return begged his pardon as he had felt mortally threatened by the Israelites ( Quran 7: 142-152 ).

) At the intercession of Moses, Aaron was saved from the plague which smote the people ( Deuteronomy 9: 20, Exodus 32: 35 ), although it was against Aaron ’ s tribe of Levi that the work of punitive vengeance was committed ( Exodus 32: 26 ).

In the Book of Exodus, Amram () Arabic عمران Imran, is the father of Aaron, Moses, and Miriam and the husband of Jochebed.

According to biblical scholars, the Torah's genealogy for Levi's descendants, is actually an aetiological myth reflecting the fact that there were four different groups among the levites – the Gershonites, Kohathites, Merarites, and Aaronids ; Aaron – the eponymous ancestor of the Aaronids – couldn't be portrayed as a brother to Gershon, Kohath, and Merari, as the narrative about the birth of Moses ( brother of Aaron ), which textual scholars attribute to the earlier Elohist source, mentions only that both his parents were Levites ( without identifying their names ).

Amram, the father of Moses and Aaron, is a revered patriarch of Islam.

Although Muslim scholars have often debated over who this verse refers to, most classical commentators and modern translators have taken the opinion that this refers to Amram, the father of Moses and Aaron.

In chapter 2 ( Sura 2 ) of the Islamic Quran ( Verse 248 ), the Children of Israel, at the time of Samuel and Saul, were given back the Tabut E Sakina ( the casket of Shekhinah ) which contained remnants of the household of Musa ( Moses ) and Harun ( Aaron ) carried by angels which confirmed peace and reassurance for them from their Lord.
