Even at their blasphemy trial in 1653, The Recorder of London, after examining John Reeve, turns to Muggleton and says, " Let Aaron speak ".

In " The Making of the English Working Class " E. P. Thompson says, " The Muggletonians ( or followers of Ludovic Muggleton ) were still preaching in the fields and parks of London at the end of the eighteenth century.

In 1625 Muggleton contracted the plague but, he says, " it was not extreme tedious to me.

" I do not speak this from hearsay of others ," says Muggleton in his autobiography, " but from a perfect knowledge which I have seen and heard.

He does not receive a straight answer although Muggleton says that faith in a time of innocence is one thing, but that faith through knowledge of good and evil is a higher state of consciousness altogether.

Muggleton says that prophets come to impose their commission which lives on after them no matter what happens to the prophet himself.

Muggleton himself says his intention is to prophesy anew: " whereby is unfolded, and plainly declared, the whole counsel of God concerning Himself, the Devil and all Mankind from the foundation of the world to all eternity.

" Notable were John Robins and Thomas Tany ( Muggleton calls him John Tannye ).

Muggleton makes clear he believed Robins guilty of self-deification and of indulging in dangerous powers when he had no grounds to consider them of divine origin.

Yet, writing in old age, Muggleton still appreciates Robins ' efficacy.

The following day Reeve, Muggleton and Dorcas Booth went to curse John Robins in prison.

Muggleton regarded these as boiling down to one issue ; whether God took notice of happenings on earth.

" So, does John Reeve see himself on a different spiritual plane to Lodowicke " the mouth " Muggleton?

Muggleton himself ruefully records that out of his family, friends and neighbours he managed only to convert his two daughters and his cousin Roger in Northamptonshire.

Muggleton seems only slowly to have grasped that if he wanted to be taken seriously as an individual prophet, he had to write, to publish and to show himself outside his immediate neighbourhood.

Understandably, such experiences left a lasting impression on Muggleton.

In a similar vein, Muggleton is reminded there is nothing in scripture foretelling the coming of one Lodowicke Muggleton, to which the reply is, " For, if there had been such a name written in scripture, many men would have named their sons Lodowicke Muggleton.

After Reeve's death Muggleton had a brief struggle for control of the group with Laurence Clarkson, a former Ranter, and subsequently with those followers of John Reeve who did not accept Muggleton's authority.

That Clarkson came to see how he had misread the situation may explain why he gave in to Muggleton so completely, even agreeing to give up writing and keeping that promise.

The alternative explanation, that Muggleton brought Clarkson to heel by cutting off his allowance, seems unlikely given that Clarkson had spent all his life making a living as a wandering preacher and casual minister.
