The alternative explanation, that Muggleton brought Clarkson to heel by cutting off his allowance, seems unlikely given that Clarkson had spent all his life making a living as a wandering preacher and casual minister.

Throughout the period until the death of John Reeve in 1658, Muggleton seems to have acted only as Reeve's ever-present sidekick.

However, it is unclear if Muggleton saw there as being a " movement " of which to be leader.

Hiding was now no longer a solution as Muggleton could be excommunicated in his absence if he did not appear and plead.
