Naproxen, an anti-inflammatory drug, utilizes an asymmetric enantioselective hydrocyanation of vinylnaphthalene from a phosphinite ( OPR < sub > 2 </ sub >) ligand, L. The enantioselectivity of this reaction is important because only the S enantiomer is medicinally desirable, whereas the R enantiomer produces harmful health effects.

Naproxen has always been marketed as the single active enantiomer.

Mild tenosynovitis causing small scale swelling can be treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs ( NSAID ) such as Naproxen, ibuprofen or diclofenac ( marketed as Voltaren and other trade names ), taken to reduce inflammation and as an analgesic.

Naproxen and naproxen sodium are marketed under various trade names, including: Aleve, Anaprox, Antalgin, Feminax Ultra, Flanax, Inza, Midol Extended Relief, Nalgesin, Naposin, Naprelan, Naprogesic, Naprosyn, Narocin, Proxen, Synflex and Xenobid.

Naproxen was originally marketed as the prescription drug Naprosyn by Syntex in 1976, and naproxen sodium was first marketed under the trade name Anaprox in 1980.

Naproxen is commonly used for the reduction of pain, fever, inflammation, and stiffness caused by conditions including migraine, osteoarthritis, kidney stones, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, gout, ankylosing spondylitis, menstrual cramps, tendinitis, and bursitis.

Naproxen works by inhibiting both the COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes.

Naproxen is a member of the 2-arylpropionic acid ( profen ) family of NSAIDs.

The VIGOR study was followed by the Assessment of Difference between Vioxx and Naproxen to Ascertain Gastrointestinal Tolerability and Effectiveness ( ADVANTAGE ) study, which showed that 9. 1 % of people taking Vioxx received a gastro-protective medicine compared with 11. 2 % of people taking naproxen, a reduction of 19 %.
