Other large cities are Opole ( Oppeln ), Gliwice ( Gleiwitz ), Katowice ( Kattowitz ) in Poland ; Ostrava ; Opava in the Czech Republic ; and Görlitz ( Zgorzelec ) in Germany.

He was born at Oppeln, Silesia ( now Opole, Poland ), into a Jewish merchant family, went to Leipzig University and then in 1887 to Berlin University, where he wrote his thesis De Gente Valeria under the supervision of Otto Hirschfeld.

In 1939 Zawiercie was directly annexed to the Upper Silesia Province ( Regierungsbezirk Oppeln ), and its name was changed to Warthenau.

The western half of Lower Silesia was incorporated into Regierungsbezirk Liegnitz ( Legnica ), the adjacent Upper Silesian land in the east into Regierungsbezirk Oppeln ( Opole ).

Charles Ferdinand Vasa ( Karol Ferdynand Waza ) ( October 13, 1613 in Warsaw-May 9, 1655 in Wyszków ), was Prince-Bishop of Breslau / Wrocław from 1625, bishop of Płock from 1640 and Duke of Oppeln Opole from 1648 to 1655.

It comprised much of the region of Upper Silesia and was eventually divided into two administrative regions ( Regierungsbezirke ), Kattowitz and Oppeln.

The provincial capital was Oppeln ( 1919 — 1938 ) and Kattowitz ( since 1941 ), while other major towns included Beuthen, Gleiwitz, Hindenburg O. S., Neiße and Ratibor.

In addition, he was the main architect of the Protestant cathedral in Berlin, Belle Vue palace, courthouses in Opole ( Oppeln ) and Olsztyn ( Allenstein ), as well as prisons in Świdnica ( Schweidnitz ) and Chorzów ( Königshütte ).

It is part of Silesia, and the territorial successor of the former German Upper Silesia, which had the same city — then Oppeln — as its capital.

Oppeln was the administrative seat of the Province of Upper Silesia from 1919 – 1939.

With the defeat of Poland in the Invasion of Poland at the beginning of World War II in 1939, formerly Polish Eastern Upper Silesia was re-added to the Province of Upper Silesa and Oppeln lost its status as provincial capital to Katowice ( renamed Kattowitz ).

After the war, the parts remaining in Weimar Germany were re-organized into the two provinces of Lower Silesia ( Niederschlesien ) and Upper Silesia ( Oberschlesien, the former Regierungsbezirk Oppeln ) in 1919.

On the German side the new Prussian province of Upper Silesia ( Oberschlesien ) with regional government in Oppeln was formed, likewise with special autonomy.

The territory remaining in Prussian Upper Silesia was administered within Regierungsbezirk Oppeln.

In 1941, the Province of Silesia was again divided into the Provinces of Upper and Lower Silesia ; Kattowitz ( Katowice, in the former Autonomous Silesian Voivodeship of pre-war Poland ) was made the capital of Upper Silesia instead of the smaller town of Oppeln.

Rochus Misch ( born 29 July 1917 in Alt Schalkowitz near Oppeln, Upper Silesia ) is a former Oberscharführer ( senior squad leader ) in the 1st SS Division Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler during World War II.

He was born in Oppeln, Silesia into a middle-class Germano-Jewish family, which moved to Neisse when he was two years of age.

From 1816 – 1945 Opole was the capital of Regierungsbezirk Oppeln within Prussia.

The king received him as an adopted son, entrusted him in 1515 with the Duchy of Oppeln, and in 1516 made him member of the tutelary government instituted for Hungary, and tutor of his son Louis II of Hungary and Bohemia.

At the court of Hungary there were two parties arrayed against each other: the Magyar party under the leadership of Zápolyas and the German party under the leadership of George of Brandenburg, whose authority was increased by the acquisition of the duchies of Ratibor and Oppeln by hereditary treaties with their respective dukes and of the territories of Oderberg, Beuthen, and Tarnowitz as pledges from the king of Bohemia, who could not redeem his debts.

After the defeat of Imperial Germany in World War I, a plebiscite was held on 20 March 1921 in Oppeln to determine if the city would be in the Weimar Republic or become part of the Second Polish Republic.

After the end of the Second World War in 1945, Oppeln was transferred from Germany to Poland according to the Potsdam Conference, and given its original Slavic name of Opole.

On 20 November a manifesto was issued in Opole ( Oppeln ) calling for public resistance and the return of John II Casimir, and in December a peasant force took Nowy Sącz.

In 1521 Ratibor came under rule of the Opole ( Oppeln ) dukes, vassals of Bohemian kings ; later succeeded by Hohenzollerns and Habsburgs.

Misch was born in Alt-Schalkowitz near Oppeln in the Province of Silesia ( now Stare Siołkowice, Poland ).

Kaluza himself was born in Wilhelmsthal ( a village that was incorporated into Oppeln ( present-day Opole ) in 1899 ).

Similarly, a significant minority of Poles ( about half a million Poles ) was still left on the German side, most of them in Oppeln ( Opole ).

Berlin's best preserved medieval Church of St. Mary's is the 1 < sup > st </ sup > preaching venue – Memorial Church being the 2 < sup > nd </ sup > – of the Bishop of the Evangelical Church of Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia ( EKBO ), a Protestant regional church body.

The country owes its former name of Upper Volta to three rivers which cross it: the Black Volta ( or Mouhoun ), the White Volta ( Nakambé ) and the Red Volta ( Nazinon ).

The Paleolithic is subdivided into the Lower Paleolithic ( Early Stone Age, ending around 350, 000 – 300, 000 years ago ), the Middle Paleolithic ( Middle Stone Age, until 50, 000 – 30, 000 years ago ), and the Upper Paleolithic.

The region is nowadays mainly represented by the administrative districts of Lower Franconia ( Unterfranken, capital city Würzburg ), Middle Franconia ( Mittelfranken, capital city Ansbach ), and Upper Franconia ( Oberfranken, capital city Bayreuth ) in Bavaria.
