For the first decade of Oswiu's reign, Deira was ruled by an independent king, Oswine, son of the apostate Osric, who belonged to the rival Deiran royal family.

In order to expiate the killing of Oswine, who was later reckoned a saint, Oswiu established Gilling Abbey at Gilling, where prayers were said for Oswine and for Oswiu.

Oswine was followed as king of the Deirans by Oswald's son Œthelwald.

In Kent, Oswine emerged as king, though only in eastern Kent ; the western half of the kingdom was ruled by Swæfheard, son of Sæbbi, the king of Essex.

On Oswald's death, Northumbria was divided again: Oswald's son Oswiu succeeded to the throne of Bernicia, and Osric's son Oswine to Deira, the southern of the two kingdoms.

Thereafter, with the exception of Oswine son of Osric, power in Northumbria was in the hands of the Idings, the descendants of Ida of Bernicia, until the middle of the 8th century.

Osric, the nephew of Edwin, ruled Deira after Edwin, but his son Oswine was put to death by Oswiu in 651.

After Oswine of Deira was killed by Oswiu of Bernicia in 651, Œthelwald became king ; it is uncertain whether Oswiu ( who was Œthelwald's uncle ) installed him as king or whether Œthelwald took the kingship in opposition to Oswiu.

His immediate predecessor was Oswine of Kent, who was probably descended from Eadbald of Kent, though not through the same line as Wihtred.

When Cædwalla departed for Rome in 688, Oswine, who was probably supported by Æthelred of Mercia, took the throne for a time.

It seems that Oswine was king of east Kent, which was usually the position of the dominant king, while Swæfheard was king of west Kent.

It is possible that Æthelred provided support to both Swæfheard and Oswine ; for each king a charter survives in which Æthelred confirms land grants they made in Kent, and Æthelred's invasion of Kent in 676 indicates his opposition to the traditional Kentish royal house.

Oswine and Oswiu came into conflict circa 651, Bede blames Oswiu for the troubles and writes: For when they had raised armies against one another, Oswin perceived that he could not maintain a war against one who had more auxiliaries than himself, and he thought it better at that time to lay aside all thoughts of engaging, and to preserve himself for better times.

Oswine lost power in 690, but Swæfheard ( son of Sebbi, the king of Essex ), who had been a king in Kent for a year or two, remained.

Oswald's son Oswiu succeeded to the throne of Bernicia, and Osric's son Oswine to Deira, the southern of the two kingdoms.

Kirby suggests that the killing of Oswine may have led to an improvement in relations between Penda and Oswiu in the early 650s.

After years of peaceful rule, Oswiu declared war on Oswine.
