Ovid, in his Amores, writes: Carmina sublimis tunc sunt peritura Lucreti / exitio terras cum dabit una dies ( which means " the verses of the sublime Lucretius will perish only when a day will bring the end of the world ").

Ovid begins by noting that the first day of the month is dedicated to Carna.

Both Varro and Festus state that the Quinquatrus was celebrated for only one day, but Ovid says that it was celebrated for five days, hence the name: on the first day no blood was shed, but that on the last four there were contests of gladiators.
Ovid says that this festival was celebrated in commemoration of the birthday of Minerva ; but according to Festus it was sacred to Minerva because her temple on the Aventine was consecrated on that day.

Conversely, the Roman poet Ovid provides a second etymology, in which he says that the month of May is named for the maiores, Latin for " elders ," and that the following month ( June ) is named for the iuniores, or " young people " ( Fasti VI. 88 ).
