Ancylopoda is a group of browsing, herbivorous, mammals in the Perissodactyla that show long, curved and cleft claws.

Morphological evidence indicates the Ancylopoda diverged from the tapirs, rhinoceroses and horses ( Euperissodactyla ) after the Brontotheria, however earlier authorities such as Osborn sometimes considered the Ancylopoda to be outside Perissodactyla or, as was popular more recently, to be related to Brontotheria.

Equidae belongs to the order Perissodactyla, which includes the extant tapirs and rhinoceros, and still more fossils.

* Order Perissodactyla ( In addition to Equidae, Perissodactyla includes four species of tapir in a single genus, as well as five living species ( belonging to four genera ) of rhinoceros.

Recent phylogenetic studies have lacked full confidence in this conclusion, however ; some studies link Perissodactyla with Ferae into a proposed clade Zooamata, while the Pegasoferae proposal goes further, suggesting Chiroptera ( bats ) are more closely related to odd-toed ungulates than even-toed ones.

( 2011 ), finds better ( but not full ) support for the traditional view, uniting Perissodactyla with Cetartiodactyla into a clade of " true ungulates ", Euungulata.

Members of the orders Perissodactyla and Artiodactyla are called the ' true ungulates ' to distinguish them from ' subungulates ' ( Paenungulata ) which include members from the afrotherian orders Proboscidea, Sirenia and Hyracoidea.

Perissodactyla and Artiodactyla comprise the largest portion of ungulates, and also include the majority of large land mammals.

Molecular phylogenetic studies have suggested that Perissodactyla and Cetartiodactyla are closest to Carnivora and Pholidota rather than to Pseudungulata.

So it seems that, of all the ungulates, only Perissodactyla and Artiodactyla descended from condylarths — assuming that the animals lumped by scientists into Condylarthra over the years are even related to one another.

Indeed, early taxonomists placed the Hyracoidea closest to the rhinoceroses, because of their dentition, and even some recent evidence suggested a possible affinity of Hyracoidea to Perissodactyla rather than to the rest of the Paenungulata.

Placentophagy has been observed in Insectivora, Rodentia, Chiroptera, Lagomorpha, Carnivora, Perissodactyla, Artiodactyla ( with the camel as a noted exception ), and Primates.

Guttural pouch: A large ( 300-500 ml ), paired, air-filled ventral diverticulum of the auditory tube found in horses and other Perissodactyla.

Among recent mammals, Paenungulata ( hyraxes, elephants, and sea cows ), Perissodactyla ( horses, rhinoceroses, and tapirs ), Artiodactyla ( pigs, deer, antelope, cows, camels, hippos, and their relatives ), Cetacea ( whales ), and Tubulidentata ( aardvarks ) are traditionally regarded as members of the Ungulata.

They are now divided into the Proboscidea, represented among living species only by three species of elephants ; the Perissodactyla, or odd-toed ungulates, including horses, tapirs and rhinoceroses ; the Suina, or pigs and peccaries ; and the Hyracoidea, or hyraxes.
