Returning to England at the end of 1880, Petrie wrote a number of articles and then met Amelia Edwards, journalist and patron of the Egypt Exploration Fund ( now the Egypt Exploration Society ), who became his strong supporter and later appointed him as Professor at her Egyptology chair at University College London.

William Matthew Flinders Petrie was born in Maryon Road, Charlton, Kent, England, the son of William Petrie ( 1821 – 1908 ) and Anne ( née Flinders ( 1812 – 1892 ).

However, later finding that Gaston Maspero placed little value on them and left them open to the elements in a yard behind the museum to deteriorate, he angrily demanded that they all be returned, forcing Maspero to pick the 12 best examples for the museum to keep and then returning 48 to Petrie, which he sent to London for a special showing at the British Museum.

Petrie claimed that his " Dynastic Race ", in which he never ceased to believe, was a " fine " Caucasian race that entered Egypt from the south in late predynastic times, conquered the " inferior " and " exhausted " " mulatto " race then inhabiting Egypt, and slowly introduced the finer Dynastic civilization as they interbred with the inferior indigenous people ( Silberman, 1999 ).

These graffittos were first reported by Flinders Petrie in 1883 and then lost to historians until the year 2001 when egyptologist Zahi Hawass rediscovered them.

Ross submitted the tune to music collector George Petrie, and it was then published by the Society for the Preservation and Publication of the Melodies of Ireland in the 1855 book The Ancient Music of Ireland, which Petrie edited.

Prior to this, cricket was played at the cricket ground located in the area then known as ' Green Hills ' ( then located beside Countess Street Petrie Terrace opposite the Victoria Barracks-now occupied by the Northern Busway ), since at least the early 1860s.

From Petrie Island, Trim runs south through the eastern suburban areas of Orleans and then south into rural former Cumberland Township.

He studied at Jesus College in Cambridge, continuing to study Archaeology and Egyptology under Kurt Sethe in Göttingen and Strasbourg and then excavated sites in and around Egypt with Flinders Petrie and Somers Clarke.

Petrie was a dedicated follower of eugenics, believing that there was no such thing as cultural or social innovation in human society, but rather that all social change is the result of biological change, such as migration and foreign conquest resulting in interbreeding.

In Mountain View Road there is an RSL which serves counter meals, and also a lawn bowls club, both overlooking the Petrie Park sporting grounds.

This so undermined the theory that Petrie rejected it, writing " there is no authentic example, that will bear examination, of the use or existence of any such measure as a ‘ Pyramid inch ,’ or of a cubit of 25. 025 British inches.

George Petrie was born in Dublin, Ireland, and grew up there, living at 21 Great Charles Street just off Mountjoy Square.
