Not until the German defeat in World War I the Schleswig Plebiscites were decreed by the Treaty of Versailles, after which the present-day German-Danish border was drawn taking effect on 15 June 1920, dividing Schleswig in a southern and northern part and leaving a considerable Danish and German minority on both sides.

Plebiscites, once passed, were also transcribed into a physical document for storage.

The three hamlets of Utersum, Witsum and Hedehusum were the only ones to vote for Denmark in Zone II of the Schleswig Plebiscites in 1920 ; yet as they were not located directly at the border they remained within Germany.

While in Northern Schleswig some smaller regions ( for example Tønder ) had a clear majority of voters for Germany in Central Schleswig all regions voted for Germany ( see Schleswig Plebiscites ).

In 1920, the Schleswig Plebiscites resulted in a clear majority vote for Amrum staying with Germany, while Tondern fell back to Denmark.

The region became a part of the Kingdom of Poland province of Royal Prussia with the Second Peace of Thorn ( 1466 ), prospered with the grain trade from southern Poland to the royal city of Gdańsk and then sustained ravages and plagues brought by several Swedish and Prussian invasions during the 17th and early 18th centuries, and was forcefully removed from Kingdom of Poland and annexed into the Kingdom of Prussia as a result of the First Partition of Poland in 1772.
