One notable person he is said to have assisted was the then Lubavitcher Rebbe in Warsaw, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok Schneersohn.

* Yeshiva Yashresh Yakov on Tuttle Avenue was founded in 1985 by Rabbi Yitzchok Lebowitz Shlita.

In January 1951, a year after the death of his father-in-law, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok Schneersohn, he assumed the leadership of the Lubavitch movement.

In 1923 Rabbi Schneerson visited Yosef Yitzchok Schneersohn for the first time.

During his stay in Berlin, R. Schneerson was assigned specific communal tasks by his father-in-law, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok Schneersohn, who also requested that he write scholarly annotations to the responsa of Tzemach Tzedek.

It was one of the last boats to cross the Atlantic before the U-boat blockade began, and joined his father-in-law, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok Schneersohn, in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, New York.

Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok Schneersohn died in 1950.

He was politically active in resisting the Haskalah in Russia, and to this end forged an alliance with Rabbi Yitzchok of Volozhin, a major leader of the misnagdim.

One of his closest disciples is the renowned economist, Rabbi Israel Kirzner, who edited Hutner's written works, Pachad Yitzchok.

As a Rosh Yeshiva of Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary at Yeshiva University in New York City, The Rav ( variantly spelled The Rov, yet pronounced The Ruv, similar to his illustrious uncle Rabbi Yitzchok Zev Soloveitchik who was called " The Rov "), as he came to be known, ordained close to 2, 000 rabbis over the course of almost half a century.

One such figure was Rabbi Yitzchok Hutner who would become the rosh yeshiva of the Yeshiva Rabbi Chaim Berlin also in Brooklyn, New York.

His son was Rabbi Avraham Schneerson of Kischinev, whose daughter, Nechama Dina Schneersohn, married Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok Schneersohn, the sixth Rebbe of Chabad-Lubavitch.

In 1940, under the leadership of the previous Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok Schneersohn, the Chabad-Lubavitch movement moved its headquarters to Brooklyn, New York in the United States.

Yosef Yitzchok Schneersohn was born in Lyubavichi, Russia, the only son of Rabbi Sholom Dovber Schneersohn ( the Rebbe Rashab ), the fifth Rebbe of Chabad.

In later years, when Kook's name became associated with the Mizrachi, part of the Religious Zionist Movement, Hutner, an eventual member of the non-Zionist Haredi Agudath Israel of America's Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah (" Council of Torah Sages "), sought to downplay his former association with Kook, even though he maintained cordial relations with Kook's son and heir Rabbi Zvi Yehuda Kook and other prominent students such as Rabbi Moshe-Zvi Neria.

Hutner did, however, maintain his relatively liberal policy during his tenure at the helm of his own Yeshiva Rabbi Chaim Berlin, allowing students to combine their day's learning in yeshiva together with attending college, mainly at Brooklyn College and later at Touro College in late afternoons and evenings.

Hutner appointed Slabodka yeshiva educated Rabbi Avigdor Miller as the Mashgiach ruchani (" spiritual mentor and supervisor ") of the yeshiva.

He was a mentor to some famous as well as controversial figures in modern Jewish outreach to other Jews, such as Rabbi David Weiss Halivni, who split with Hutner and became a prominent scholar at Conservative Judaism's Jewish Theological Seminary of America ( JTSA ).

Another was a cousin to Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, who was appointed as the mashgiach ruchani (" spiritual supervisor ") at the Yeshiva Chaim Berlin, but who split with Hutner on policy matters in the 1970s.

In the early forties Hutner asked a friend from Slabodka, Rabbi Saul Lieberman to become a dean-Talmudical lecturer in Yeshiva Rabbi Chaim Berlin.

The remaining 40-plus Jewish men – including Rabbi Hutner, Rabbi David, and two students accompanying Rabbi Hutner, Rabbi Meir Fund and Rabbi Yaakov Drillman – and male flight crew continued to be held hostage in and around Amman, Jordan ; Rabbi Hutner was held alone in an isolated location while Jews around the world prayed fervently for his safe release.

* The work of the Rosh, Rabbi Asher ben Jehiel ( 1250 ?/ 1259 ?– 1328 ), an abstract of the Talmud, concisely stating the final halakhic decision and quoting later authorities, notably Alfasi, Maimonides, and the Tosafists.

In writing the Shulchan Aruch, Rabbi Karo based his rulings on three authorities — Maimonides ( Rambam ), Asher ben Jehiel ( Rosh ), and Isaac Alfasi ( Rif ); he considered the Mordechai in inconclusive cases.

Rabbi Norman Lamm ( the Chancellor, Rosh Yeshiva of the yeshiva ", and former president of Yeshiva University, a major Modern Orthodox Jewish institution ) advocated that some ( although not all ) homosexuals should be viewed as diseased and in need of compassion and treatment, rather than willful rebels who should be ostracized.

Rabbi Norman Lamm, one of the leaders of Modern Orthodoxy and Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva University's Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, opposes giving semicha to women.

They evoked criticism as minimizing acceptance of the entire Torah ( Rabbi S. of Montpelier, Yad Rama, Y. Alfacher, Rosh Amanah ).

Thereafter the Rosh assumed Rabbi Meir's position in Worms.

* Rav Dr. Moshe David Tendler-Rav Tendler is the Rabbi Isaac and Bella Tendler Professor of Jewish Medical Ethics, and is a Professor of Biology, as well as being a Rosh Yeshiva in Yeshivat Rav Yitzchak Elchanan ( MYP / RIETS ).

This allowed Rabbi Schneerson to pray with his followers, beginning with the Rosh Hashanah services, and to appear before them after services either by having the window opened or by being carried out onto the balcony.
