Three sons of Sōtan each became heirs to the family name, Sen, and to the family profession of teaching the Way of Tea that their mutual family founder, Rikyū, had developed.

The other guests, disciples of Rikyū, snickered at the tea growers manner of making tea, but Rikyū was moved to say, “ It is the finest .” On the way home, one of the disciples asked Rikyū, “ Why were you so impressed by such a shameful performance ?” Rikyū answered, “ This man did not invite me with the idea of showing off his skill.

In the 16th century, Sen Rikyū, the Japanese tea master, was involved with the construction of the Jurakudai and had a tile-maker, named Chōjirō, produce hand-moulded tea bowls for use in the wabi-styled tea ceremony that was Rikyū's ideal.

Records of the word funoyaki occurs as far back as the 16th century, and Sen no Rikyū writes about it, but what it really was can only be speculated, and may have involve the use of fu ( wheat gluten ), though certainly by the late Edo Period funoyaki referred to a thin crepe baked on a cooking pot, with miso basted on one side.

As a young man, Rikyū studied tea under the townsman of Sakai named Kitamuki Dōchin ( 1504 – 62 ), and at the age of nineteen, through Dōchin's introduction, he began to study tea under Takeno Jōō, who is also associated with the development of the wabi aesthetic in tea ceremony.

He ends the book with a chapter on Tea Masters, and spends some time talking about Sen no Rikyū and his contribution to the Japanese Tea Ceremony.

Identifying with nature in this matter necessarily creates a state of mind with a detached objective quality ( Soshitsu Sen 66 ).” Once a tea grower invited Rikyū to have tea.

Overwhelmed with joy at Rikyū ’ s acceptance, the tea grower led him to his tearoom and served tea to Rikyū himself.

However small, its members conserved Tōhaku's quiet and reserved aesthetic, which many attribute to the influence of Sesshū as well as his contemporary and friend, Sen no Rikyū.

There are three iemoto ( sōke ), or " head houses " of the Japanese Way of Tea, that are directly descended from Rikyū: the Omotesenke, Urasenke, and Mushakōjisenke, all three of which are dedicated to passing forward the teachings of their mutual family founder, Rikyū.

It was during his later years that Rikyū began to use very tiny, rustic tea rooms referred as sōan ( lit., " grass hermitage "), such as the two-tatami tea room named Taian, which can be seen today at Myōkian temple in Yamazaki, a suburb of Kyoto, and which is credited to his design.

Though not the inventor of the philosophy of wabi-sabi, which finds beauty in the very simple, Rikyū is among those most responsible for popularizing it, developing it, and incorporating it into tea ceremony.

Although Rikyū had been one of Hideyoshi's closest confidants, because of crucial differences of opinion and other reasons which remain uncertain, Hideyoshi ordered him to commit ritual suicide.

In The 48 Laws of Power, American author Robert Greene states that Hideyoshi was enraged by Rikyū's commissioning of a vain statue of himself which was placed inside the palace gates, through which Hideyoshi entered, thus putting himself below Rikyū.

Nagamasu was an accomplished practitioner of the tea ceremony, which he studied under the master, Sen no Rikyū.

Even after he ordered Rikyū's suicide, Hideyoshi is said to have built his many construction projects based upon principles of beauty promoted by Rikyū.

Sen no Rikyū by Hasegawa Tōhaku

Rikyū is known by many names ; for convenience this article will refer to him as Rikyū throughout.

Another major chanoyu event of Hideyoshi's that Rikyū played a central role in was the Kitano Ōchanoyu, the grand tea gathering held by Hideyoshi at the Kitano Tenman-gū in 1587.

Memorials for Rikyū are observed annually by many schools of Japanese tea ceremony.

The only extant chashitsu designed by Sen Rikyū, representing his concept of wabi-cha.

Patronized by the tea master Sen no Rikyū, the Raku family supplied glazed earthenware tea bowls.

* Tai-an tea house at Myōki-an Temple in Kyoto, built in 1582 by Sen no Rikyū.

These kanji are thought to have been incorporated by Sen no Rikyū ( 1522 – 91 ), to indicate the frugal meal served in the austere style of chanoyu ( Japanese tea ceremony ).

Tea ceremony would be further formalized by Sen no Rikyū in the 16th century.

While Hideyoshi's reason may never be known for certain, it is known that Rikyū committed seppuku at his residence within Hideyoshi's Jurakudai villa in Kyoto in 1591 on the 28th day of the 2nd month ( of the traditional Japanese lunar calendar ; or April 21 when calculated according to the modern Gregorian calendar ), at the age of seventy.

When Hideyoshi was building his lavish residence at Fushimi the following year, he remarked that he wished its construction and decoration to be pleasing to Rikyū.

Sen no Rikyū decreed that the garden should be left unswept for several hours before the ceremony, so that leaves would be scattered in a natural way on the path.

Similarly, Amagasaki ( Ama-ga-saki, Nun ’ s peak ) is generally written 尼崎, but can be written 尼ヶ崎, and Sen no Rikyū is written 千利休 ( here the particle is between the family and given name ).

At least one authoritative Japanese source states that it developed from the spouted and handled water kettle called tedorigama that was already being used in chanoyu in the era of Sen no Rikyū ( 1522-91 ).

In February 1591, Hideyoshi ordered Sen no Rikyū to commit suicide.

Rikyū had been a trusted retainer and master of the tea ceremony under both Hideyoshi and Nobunaga.

Under Hideyoshi's patronage, Rikyū made significant changes to the aesthetics of the tea ceremony that had lasting influence over many aspects of Japanese culture.

The art of the tea ceremony also flourished at this time, and both Nobunaga and Hideyoshi lavished time and money on this pastime, collecting tea bowls, caddies, and other implements, sponsoring lavish social events, and patronizing acclaimed masters such as Sen no Rikyū.

Rikyū was born in Sakai, present-day Osaka prefecture.

Rikyū also underwent Zen training at Daitoku-ji temple in Kyoto.

In 1579, at the age of 58, Rikyū became a tea master for Oda Nobunaga and, following Nobunaga's death in 1582, he was a tea master for Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Rikyū had a preference for simple, rustic items made in Japan, rather than the expensive Chinese-made items that were fashionable at the time.

Rikyū had a number of children, including a son known in history as Sen Dōan, and daughter known as Okame.
