Romansh ( also spelled Romansch, Rumants ( c ) h, or Romanche ; Romansh: /// rumàntsch ; German: Rätoromanisch ; Italian: Romancio ) is a Rhaeto-Romance language descended from the Vulgar Latin spoken by the Roman era occupiers of the region.

In the 2000 Swiss census, 35, 095 people ( of which 27, 038 in the canton of Grisons ) indicated Romansh as the language of " best command ", and 61, 815 also as a " regularly spoken " language.

Spoken by around 0. 9 % of Switzerland's 7. 7 million inhabitants, Romansh is Switzerland's least-used national language in terms of number of speakers and the tenth most spoken language in Switzerland overall.

Romansh is a Romance language descending from Vulgar Latin, the spoken language of the Roman Empire.

It is also the only canton where the Romansh language is still spoken.

Romansh is an umbrella term covering a group of closely related dialects, spoken in southern Switzerland and all belonging to the Rhaeto-Romance language family.

Swiss French is not to be confused with Franco-Provençal / Arpitan ( also spoken in Romandie ) or Romansh ( spoken in the Grisons ), two other individual Romance languages.

In the movie the location is implied as being near St Moritz where Romansh is still spoken, and " Piz " would be appropriate as the dialect name for peak.

However the restaurant is actually located in the Bernese Oberland, where Romansh is not spoken and " piz " is not used.

The Romansh language, which is still spoken in some parts of the Swiss Canton Graubünden, has survived in many of the regional field names.

Author and anthropologist Pascal Hofmeier notes that in choosing to rap in Romansh, a language spoken by only a few thousand people, yet instantly identifiable as Swiss, Liricas Analas takes the concept of Lokalpatriotismus ( local pride ), which is so prevalent in the Swiss hip-hop scene, to an extreme level.

Graubünden is an area in which German, Romansh, Lombard and Italian are all spoken, and hence during 16th century rule by Graubünden, the region became known variously as Veltlin, Westtirol ( West Tyrol ), and the Welsche Vogteien (" Foreign Bailiwicks ").

* Piz is also part of the name of many mountains in places where Romansh is spoken, as it means " peak " in that language.

Romansh is spoken by some 1 % of Switzerland's 7. 4 million inhabitants.

Romansh was nationally standardised in 1982 by Zürich-based linguist Heinrich Schmid.

Romansh has been recognized as one of four " national languages " by the Swiss Federal Constitution since 1938.

From 1961 to 1981 it provisionally replaced (" When You Call, My Country ", French ; Italian, Romansh ) the anthem by Johann Rudolf Wyss ( 1743 – 1818 ) which was set to the melody of God Save the Queen.

The German-language patriotic song ( French, Italian, Romansh ), composed in 1811 by Johann Rudolf Wyss ( 1743 – 1818 ), was the first national anthem, used until 1961.

In 1940, Carigiet was approached by the Romansh speaking author Selina Chönz who asked him to illustrate her story Uorsin and publish it as a children ’ s picture book.

In some places when eaten by themselves they are known in Romansh as " bizochels bluts ", or “ bald pizokel ”.

The most important work to discuss him was the novel by Conrad Ferdinand Meyer ( 1876 ), which among other accomplishments changed his name, at least in popular percpetion, from Giorgio, Georg or Zoartz ( the most common forms during his lifetime in Italian, German and Romansh, respectively ) to the more north German ' Jürg.

The local dialect, intermediate between Romansh and Lombard, has been categorized in a dictionary, funded by the local administration.

In 1946, a Romansh writers ’ union was established by Artur Caflisch and Jon Guidon, known since 2004 as ULR ( Union for Romansh Literature ).

Las Cristallas, the Romansh " radioscola " ( radio school, or lectures delivered by radio broadcast ), premiered on 27 January 1955.

In the 11th and 12th Centuries the Valser valley was extensively used by the local Romansh.
