Another fortress, Rumelihisarı, was built between 1451 and 1452 by Sultan Mehmed II opposite of Anadoluhisarı on the European side in order to obtain absolute control over the sea traffic of the Bosporus Strait, which was especially vital for the Genoese in Galata, who were allied with the Byzantines and had colonies in the Black Sea such as Caffa, Sinop and Amasra.

Rumelihisarı is situated at the narrowest point with 660 meters of the Bosphorus strait, just opposite of Anadoluhisarı ( Anatolian Castle ) on the Anatolian side, which is another Ottoman fortress that was built between 1393 and 1394 by Sultan Bayezid I.

On the location of Rumelihisarı, there had been a Roman fortification in the past, which was used as a prison by the Byzantines and Genoese.

It was later renamed as Rumelihisarı, which means " Fortress on the Land of the Romans ", i. e. Byzantine Europe, or the Balkan peninsula.

Early illustrations show that it was originally covered by a conical roof, like similar towers in the Yedikule Fortress and Rumelihisarı fortress in Istanbul.

Rumelihisarı was built by Sultan Mehmed II between 1451 and 1452 in order to control the sea traffic on the Bosphorus strait and prevent aid from the Black Sea to reach Constantinople during the Turkish siege of the city in 1453, particularly from the Genoese colonies such as Caffa, Sinop and Amasra.

Rumelihisarı was partly destroyed by an earthquake in 1509, but was repaired soon after.

The much larger and more elaborate Rumelihisarı (" Fortress of Rumeli ") was built by Sultan Mehmed II in just over four months in 1452.

The Sarıyer district is a huge area consisting of the villages on the European side of the Bosphorus from Rumelifeneri, down through Tarabya, Yeniköy, İstinye, Emirgan to Rumelihisarı.

In fact, as the Ottoman Turks closed in on Constantinople, they constructed a fortification on each side of the strait, Anadoluhisarı ( 1393 ) and Rumelihisarı ( 1451 ).

Rumelihisarı ( Rumelian Castle ) is a fortress located in the Sarıyer district of Istanbul, Turkey, on a hill at the European side of the Bosphorus.

The castles are Rumelihisarı and Anadoluhisarı, respectively.

The Rumelihisarı fortification has one small tower, three main towers, and thirteen small watchtowers placed on the walls connecting the main towers.

Since 1960 Rumelihisarı has been a museum and an open-air theater for various concerts at festivals during the summer months.

Rumelihisarı is open to public every day except Wednesdays from 9: 00 to 16: 30.

The twin forts of Anadoluhisarı and Rumelihisarı lie to the north of Constantinople, at the narrowest point of the Bosporus.

In the summertime, Rumelihisarı is the venue for a series of popular open-air concerts.
