The subsequent single-only release " Shakespeare's Sister " reached number 26 on the UK Singles Chart, although the only single taken from the album, " That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore ", was less successful, barely making the top 50.

Their debut single "( We Don't Need This ) Fascist Groove Thang " attracted some attention and, due to its overtly left-wing political lyrics, was banned by BBC Radio 1 DJ Mike Read ( who is a staunch supporter of the Conservative Party ), and neither this nor any other of the four singles taken from the band's debut album Penthouse and Pavement managed to reach the Top 40 in the UK Singles Chart.

Also that year, the single " Gaudete " from Below the Salt belatedly became a Christmas hit single, reaching number 14 in the UK Singles Chart, although this a cappella piece, taken from the late renaissance song collection Piae Cantiones from Finland and sung entirely in Latin, cannot be considered representative of the band's music, nor the album from which it was taken.

Because of 4AD's independent status, distribution in the United States was handled by British label Rough Trade Records ; however, it failed to chart in either the UK or the U. S. " Gigantic " was the only single taken from the release, and only reached number 93 on the UK Singles Chart.

A single taken from the album, " Heartsong " received extensive airplay and reached # 21 in the UK Singles Chart.

Early in their career, their 1993 EP Jenny Ondioline entered the UK Singles Chart, but financial issues prevented the band from printing enough records to satisfy demand.
