Snorri and Sturluson
The primary sources regarding Asgard come from the Prose Edda, written in the 13th century by Icelandic Snorri Sturluson, and the Poetic Edda, compiled in the 13th century from a basis of much older Skaldic poetry.
In the 12th century eddic prose Gylfaginning Snorri Sturluson relates it as the first of a series of abodes in heaven:

The pair are attested in both the Poetic Edda, compiled in the 13th century from earlier traditional sources, and the Prose Edda, written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson.
Both Fundinn Noregr and Snorri Sturluson in Skáldskaparmál state that Ægir is the same as the sea-giant Hlér, who lives on the isle of Hlésey, and this is borne out by kennings.
The dating of the events in the poem has been confirmed by archaeological excavations of the barrows indicated by Snorri Sturluson and by Swedish tradition as the graves of Ohthere ( dated to c. 530 ) and his son Eadgils ( dated to c. 575 ) in Uppland, Sweden.

Snorri Sturluson quoted this old poem in Skáldskaparmál, saying that because of this legend Heimdall is called " Seeker of Freyja's Necklace " ( Skáldskaparmál, section 8 ) and Loki is called " Thief of Brísingamen " ( Skáldskaparmál, section 16 ).
Snorri Sturluson writes in the Gylfaginning after describing Odin, Thor, and Baldr:
Snorri Sturluson clearly distinguishes the god Bragi from the mortal skald Bragi Boddason whom he often mentions separately.
In the Prose Edda Snorri Sturluson quotes many stanzas attributed to Bragi Boddason the old ( Bragi Boddason inn gamli ), a court poet who served several Swedish kings, Ragnar Lodbrok, Östen Beli and Björn at Hauge who reigned in the first half of the 9th century.
The Icelandic mythographer and historian Snorri Sturluson referred to dwarves ( dvergar ) as " dark-elves " ( dökkálfar ) or " black-elves " ( svartálfar ).

Snorri and based
The assumption that Snorri Sturluson is responsible for writing the Prose Edda is largely based on the following paragraph from a portion of Codex Upsaliensis, an early 14th century manuscript containing the Prose Edda:
Our knowledge of Olof is mostly based on Snorri Sturluson's and Adam of Bremen's accounts, which have been subject to criticism from source-critical scholars.
These include Trollwoman, ( 1948 ), Head Ransom, ( 1948 ), based on a poem that Egil Skallagrimsson composed to save his own head and bleep-Ride, ( 1944 ) taken from the Prose Edda of Snorri Sturlusson.
In Snorri Sturluson's Ynglinga saga, a part of the Heimskringla, he mentions the tradition of Halga, Eadgils and Yrsa, and he based his account on the Skjöldunga saga ( he had access to the now lost original version ).
The following description is based on the account in Ynglinga saga, written in the 1220s by Snorri Sturluson.

The play is based on the story of Haakon Jarl and Tormod Kark as portrayed in the Sagas by Snorri Sturluson.

Snorri and work
Völuspá, the first poem of the work, mentions many of the features and characters of Asgard portrayed by Snorri, such as Yggdrasil and Iðavöllr.
Later in the work, when Snorri describes Baldr, he gives a longer description, citing Grímnismál, though he does not name the poem:
For events of mid-12th century, Snorri explicitly names the now lost work Hryggjarstykki as his source.
Scholars disagree about the various, too often contradictory, accounts of his life given in sources from his era of history, such as the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Adam of Bremen's Gesta Hammaburgensis Ecclesiae Pontificum, and the Heimskringla, a 13th-century work by Icelandic author Snorri Sturluson.
It has been noted that this attribution, along with other primary manuscripts, are not clear whether or not Snorri is more than the compiler of the work and the author of Háttatal or if he is the author of the entire Prose Edda.
Saxo's inclusion of Amleth is the most significant part of the Gesta Danorum, however the work also has value in its description of the canonization of Canute and further in comparison to Snorri, whose work shares many characters and stories, creating a better understanding of pre-Christian Scandinavia.
In Ynglinga saga section of the same work, Snorri relates:
His work was later combined into the Heimskringla when it was recorded by Snorri Sturluson.
Other parts of the extensive work of Snorri Sturluson ( and other saga writers ) may however be considered valid references for finding elements of the ancient history of Scandinavian people and their religious customs and beliefs.
In the same work, Snorri wrote that the Swedes burnt their dead king Vanlade and raised a stone over his ashes by the River Skyt ( one of the tributaries of the River Fyris ):
The work is now lost but was used as a source by later authors, including Snorri Sturluson.
The Temple at Uppsala was a religious center in Norse paganism once located at what is now Gamla Uppsala ( Swedish " Old Uppsala "), Sweden attested in Adam of Bremen's 11th century work Gesta Hammaburgensis ecclesiae pontificum and in Heimskringla, written by Snorri Sturluson in the 13th century.
This was where the Battle of Stiklestad took place, as described by Snorri Sturluson in his famous work Heimskringla, written about 200 years later.
