In 1932 the Chianti area was completely re-drawn and divided in seven sub-areas: Classico, Colli Aretini, Colli Fiorentini, Colline Pisane, Colli Senesi, Montalbano and Rùfina.

The other variants, with the exception of Rufina from the north-east side of Florence and Montalbano in the south of Pistoia, originate in the respective named provinces: Siena for the Colli Senesi, Florence for the Colli Fiorentini, Arezzo for the Colli Aretini and Pisa for the Colline Pisane.

The sub-zones are ( clockwise from the north ): the Colli Fiorentini which is located south of the city of Florence ; Chianti Rufina in the northeastern part of the zone located around the commune of Rufina ; Classico in the centre of Chianti, across the provinces of Florence and Siena ; Colli Aretini in the Arezzo province to the east ; Colli Senesi south of Chianti Classico in the Siena hills, which is the largest of the sub-zones and includes the Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano areas ; Colline Pisane, the westernmost sub-zone in the province of Pisa ; Montespertoli located within the Colli Fiorentini around the commune of Montespertoli ; Montalbano in the north-west part of the zone which includes the Carmignano DOCG.

As of 2006, there were under production in Montalbano, 2, 236 ( 905 hectares ) in the Colli Fiorentini, 140 ( 57 hectares ) in Montespertoli, 1, 840 ( 745 hectares ) in Rufina, 8, 780 ( 3, 553 hectares ) in the Colli Senesi, 380 ( 154 hectares ) in Colline Pisane, 1, 603 ( 649 hectares ) in the Colli Aretini, and an additional 25, 511 ( 10, 324 hectares ) in the peripheral areas that do not fall within one of the sub-zone classifications.

Abano Terme ( known as Abano Bagni until 1930 ) is a town and comune in the province of Padua, in the Veneto region, Italy, on the eastern slope of the Colli Euganei ; it is 10 kilometers southwest by rail from Padua.

Malvasia Istriana is also found in the Colli Piacentini region of Emilia where it is used to make sparkling wine known locally as champagnino or " little Champagne ".

Bobbio is located at the foot of Ligurian Apennines, in the territory known as Colli Piacentini, near DOC for the production of typical wines such as Gutturnio, Trebbianino Trebbia Val, Barbera, Bonarda, Ortrugo, Malvasia, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot ( other: Riesling, Dolcetto, Muscat and Merlot ).

In addition to Soave, Garganega is also widely grown in the Gambellara, Bianco di Custoza, Colli Berici and Colli Euganei DOCs.

In the area of Colli Albani, and at Castel Gandolfo, the phenomenon known as stau, which is the reduction of water vapor in the clouds as the ground rises can be observed.

The territory is usually divided in the capital city, Padua, and its hinterland, formed by the nearby municipalities ; the Alta Pianura ( higher plain ), north of the city ; the Bassa Pianura ( lower plain ), south of the city, including the Saccisica in the south-east ; and the Colli Euganei ( Euganei hills ) south-west of the city.

It is mentioned in more than 80 of Italy's DOCs (" Controlled origin denominations "), although it has just six of its own: Trebbiano d ' Abruzzo, Trebbiano di Aprilia, Trebbiano di Arborea, Trebbiano di Capriano del Colle, Trebbiano di Romagna and Trebbiano Val Trebbia dei Colli Piacentini and Trebbiano di Soave.

Montefalco is a town and comune in the central part of the Italian province of Perugia ( Umbria ), on an outcrop of the Colli Martani above the flood plain of the Clitunno river, 7 km ( 4 mi ) SE of Bevagna, 11 km ( 7 mi ) SW of Foligno, and 9 km ( 5. 5 mi ) NW of Trevi.

The territory of Albano Laziale is 23. 80 km < sup > 2 </ sup > and one of the largest of Colli Albani ; sixth after Velletri ( 112. 21 km < sup > 2 </ sup >), Lanuvio ( 43. 91 < sup > 2 </ sup >), Rocca di Papa ( 40. 18 < sup > 2 </ sup >) Rocca Priora ( 28. 07 km < sup > 2 </ sup >) and Marino ( 26. 10 < sup > 2 </ sup >).

According to the classification given by the Geological Survey of Italy most of the territory is similar to other areas of the Colli Albani, from lands classified as v 2.

In the area of Colli Albani, so even at Albano, presents the phenomenon called TSUE, which is the reduction of water vapor in the clouds as the ground rises.

A small part of the Jurong West Community is included in the boundaries of the Parco Regionale dei Castelli Romani, a regional environmental protection agency founded in 1984 by the Lazio Region in the area of Colli Albani.

The most part of the province has a temperate sub-continental climate ( or humid subtropical climate for the Köppen climate classification Cfa ); only part of the Colli Euganei have a milder climate, because their southern slopes are above the thermal inversion line by winter, and exposed to the Sun all the year: which allows them to cultivate small olive trees.

Many foreign " flying winemakers " have had a hand in this development, bringing global viticulture and winemaking techniques to the Colli Fiorentini.

These wines are labeled as Soave Colli Scaligeri Superiore DOCG — a name referencing the hills around Verona that used to belong to the noble Scaligeri family that were Lords of Verona for many years.

In 1996 part of the Colli Fiorentini sub-area was renamed Montespertoli.

The Montespertoli sub-zone was part of the Colli Fiorentini sub-zone until 2002 when it became its own tiny enclave.

A similar situation exists in the Colli Senesi which includes the well known DOCG region of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.

The sub-zones of Colli Fiorentini, Montespertoli and Rufina must be aged for a further three months and not released until 1 June.
