Boer (,, or ; ) is the Dutch and Afrikaans word for farmer, which came to denote the descendants of the Dutch-speaking settlers of the eastern Cape frontier in Southern Africa during the 18th century, as well as those who left the Cape Colony during the 19th century to settle in the Orange Free State, Transvaal ( which are together known as the Boer Republics ), and to a lesser extent Natal.

* 1897 – The British Colony of Natal annexes Zululand.

Both the Cape Colony and the Colony of Natal had Irish prime ministers: Sir Thomas Upington, " The Afrikaner from Cork "; and Sir Albert Hime, from Kilcoole in County Wicklow.

The colony was bound by the Orange River Colony, Natal Colony, and Cape Colony it was divided into seven administrative districts-Berea, Leribe, Maseru, Mohales Hock, Mafeteng, Qacha's Nek and Quthing.

In 1893, he accepted a year-long contract from Dada Abdulla & Co., an Indian firm, to a post in the Colony of Natal, South Africa, then part of the British Empire.

The Boer Republics of the ZAR and the Orange Free State were united with the Cape Colony and Natal Colony in 1910 to become the Union of South Africa.

In the first phase, the Boers mounted pre-emptive strikes into British-held territory in Natal and the Cape Colony, besieging the British garrisons of Ladysmith, Mafeking and Kimberley.

After Natal and the Cape Colony were secure, the British were able to invade the Transvaal, and the republic's capital, Pretoria, was ultimately captured in June 1900.

War was declared on 11 October 1899 with a Boer offensive into the British-held Natal and Cape Colony areas.

The Boers struck first on 12 October at Kraaipan, an attack that heralded the invasion of the Cape Colony and Colony of Natal between October 1899 and January 1900.

It came into being on 31 May 1910 with the unification of four previously separate British colonies: Cape Colony, Natal Colony, Transvaal Colony and Orange River Colony.

The Cape Colony was heavily dependent upon customs as a source of tax revenue and subsequently was directly competing with both Natal and Portuguese East Africa ( Mozambique ).

The ' Colony ' was very successful for a time and regularly produced a newspaper called the ' Achill Missionary Herald '.

The ship landed in 1630 and the Massachusetts Bay Colony was established at what is now Boston, Massachusetts.

Virginia Dare ( born August 18, 1587 ) was the first child born in the Americas to English parents, Ananias and Eleanor White Dare in the short-lived Roanoke Colony.

The province's name was chosen by Queen Victoria when the Colony of British Columbia, i. e. " the Mainland ", became a British colony in 1858.

* 1775 – John Murray, the Royal Governor of the Colony of Virginia, starts the first mass emancipation of slaves in North America by issuing Lord Dunmore's Offer of Emancipation, which offers freedom to slaves who abandoned their colonial masters in order to fight with Murray and the British.

The British colony would be officially designated Western Australia in 1832, but was known informally for many years as the Swan River Colony after the area's major watercourse.

Despite political complications that arose from time to time ( such as an ill-fated scheme by the British Colonial Office to enforce a confederation in Southern Africa in 1878, and tensions with the Afrikaner-dominated Government of Transvaal over trade and railroad construction ), economic and social progress in the Cape Colony continued at a steady pace until the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer Wars in 1899.

At least by the mid 1820s, the army and navy were going out from the Colony to attack chiefs whose behaviour did not conform to British dictates.

On 31 August 1896 a Proclamation was issued in the Colony declaring that territory to be a British " Protectorate ".
