Much of the party's initial membership came from the Social Democratic Alliance.

Three teams with a total of 44 candidates contested the general election held on November 20, 1996: the governing National Team, Team Cayman and the Democratic Alliance Group.

The current lower house — the Chamber of Deputies — contains 65 members of the governing coalition: 21 Christian Democrats ( PDC ), 15 Socialists ( PS ), 22 Party for Democracy ( PPD ) and seven Social Democrat Radical Party ( PRSD ); 54 from the center-right Alliance for Chile ( APC ): 34 Independent Democratic Union ( UDI ) and 20 National Renewal ( RN ); and 1 from the Independent Regional Force ( FRI ) coalition: 1 Regionalist Action Party of Chile ( PAR ).

In April 1982, Edén Pastora ( Comandante Cero ), one of the heroes in the fight against Somoza, organized the Sandinista Revolutionary Front ( FRS ) – embedded in the Democratic Revolutionary Alliance ( ARDE ) – and declared war on the Sandinista government.

The president was first head of a 26-member cabinet dominated by the Alliance of Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Congo ( ADFL ).

For many years the Democratic Progressive Party officially recognized several factions within its membership, such as the New Tide faction ( 新潮流系 ), the Formosa faction ( 美麗島系 ), the Justice Alliance faction ( 正義連線系 ) and Welfare State Alliance faction ( 福利國系 ).

The leftist elements within Velasco's Democratic Alliance, which dominated the constituent assembly that was convened to write a new constitution, were nonetheless destined to be disappointed.

Since 20 July 2004, ELDR is politically represented in the European Parliament by the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe ( ALDE ) parliamentary group, formed in conjunction with the European Democratic Party.

The ELDR Europarty allied with the European Democratic Party in 2004 to form the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, with a matching group in the European Parliament.

One possibility was a partnership between the FDP, the Social Democratic Party of Germany ( SPD ) and the Alliance 90 / The Greens, known as a " traffic light coalition ", named after the colors of the three parties.

In 1998, the BJP formed the National Democratic Alliance ( NDA ) with several other parties and became the first non-Congress government to complete a full five-year term.

National elections held on 13 May 2001 returned Berlusconi to power at the head of the five-party center-right " Freedom House " coalition, comprising the prime minister's own party, Forza Italia, the National Alliance, the Northern League, the Christian Democratic Center, and the Democrats ' Center Union.

The election set against two new parties, the Democratic Party ( founded in October 2007 by the union of the Democrats of the Left and Democracy is Freedom – The Daisy ) led by Walter Veltroni, and The People of Freedom ( federation of Forza Italia, National Alliance and other parties ) led by Silvio Berlusconi.

In 1860, the Tennessee delegation nominated Johnson for president at the Democratic National Convention, and Johnson tentatively offered himself as a Vice-President on the Douglas ticket as a back up plan.

Kelly was a lifelong supporter of the Democratic Party which occasionally created difficulty for him as his period of greatest prominence coincided with the McCarthy era in the U. S. In 1947, he was part of the Committee for the First Amendment, the Hollywood delegation which flew to Washington to protest at the first official hearings by the House Committee on Un-American Activities.

In 1984, the OAU seated a delegation of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic ( SADR ), the shadow government of the Polisario ; Morocco, consequently, withdrew from the OAU.

In 1972, Democratic nominee George McGovern threw Daley out of the Democratic National Convention ( replacing his delegation with one led by Jesse Jackson ).

In mid-1964, the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party ( MFDP ) was organized with the purpose of challenging Mississippi's all-white and anti-civil rights delegation to the Democratic National Convention of that year as not representative of all Mississippians.

The national Party's liberal leaders supported a compromise in which the white delegation and the MFDP would have an even division of the seats ; Johnson was concerned that, while the regular Democrats of Mississippi would probably vote for Goldwater anyway, if the Democratic Party rejected the regular Democrats, he would lose the Democratic Party political structure that he needed to win in the South.

Eventually, Hubert Humphrey, Walter Reuther and black civil rights leaders ( including Roy Wilkins, Martin Luther King, and Bayard Rustin ) worked out a compromise with MFDP leaders: the MFDP would receive two non-voting seats on the floor of the Convention ; the regular Mississippi delegation would be required to pledge to support the party ticket ; and no future Democratic convention would accept a delegation chosen by a discriminatory poll.

Although he chaired the Illinois delegation to the Democratic National Convention, he gained little support.

In 2005, he and four other Democratic members of Oregon's congressional delegation filed an amicus brief in the Supreme Court case of Gonzales v. Oregon in support of the State of Oregon, and praised the eventual decision to uphold the law.

At the 1932 Democratic convention, he swung the Mississippi delegation to Franklin D. Roosevelt on the crucial third ballot and became welcome at the White House.

In the New York delegation, Brinkley served as a delegate on the 2000 Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles. Brinkley supports animal rights, most notably through the organization PETA, having previously spoken out against the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

Shaheen is the first Democratic senator from New Hampshire since John A. Durkin, who was defeated in 1980, and is currently the most junior senior Senator, as well as the most senior member of the current NH congressional delegation.

During the 1988 U. S. presidential election, Bordallo was a member of Guam's uncommitted delegation to the 1988 Democratic National Convention.

In 2000, Holbrooke led a UN Security Council delegation in a series of diplomatic negotiations throughout Africa, including to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Rwanda and Uganda.

There they challenged the right of the Mississippi Democratic Party's delegation to participate in the convention, claiming that the regulars had been illegally elected in a completely segregated process that violated both party regulations and federal law, and that furthermore the regulars had no intention of supporting Lyndon B. Johnson, the party's presidential candidate, in the November election.

Upon arriving, the SLP Scots were told by the credentials committee of the congress to submit their credentials for participation to the British delegation, a group which included the rival Social Democratic Federation.

However, Green had public support of the entire Wisconsin Congressional delegation, Democrat and Republican, as well as a number of other key Democratic leaders.
