The notion of infinitesimally small quantities had previously been discussed extensively by the Eleatic School, but nobody had been able to put them on a firm logical basis, with paradoxes such as Zeno's paradox occurring that had not been resolved to universal satisfaction.

The Parmenides purports to be an account of a meeting between the two great philosophers of the Eleatic school, Parmenides and Zeno of Elea, and a young Socrates.

Its ethical teachings were derived from Socrates, recognizing a single good, which was apparently combined with the Eleatic doctrine of Unity.

Thus the Eleatic idea of " The One " was identified with the Socratic " Form of the Good ," and the opposite of Good was regarded by Euclid as non-existent.

He has been claimed as an influence on Eleatic philosophy, although that is disputed, and a precursor to Epicurus, a representative of a total break between science and religion.

Whereas the Republic is premised on a distinction between the sort of knowledge possessed by the philosopher and that possessed by the king or political man, Socrates explores only the character of the philosopher ; in the Statesman, on the other hand, a participant referred to as the Eleatic Stranger discusses the sort of knowledge possessed by the political man while Socrates listens quietly.

Melissus of Samos (; 5th century BC ) was the third and last member of the ancient school of Eleatic philosophy, whose other members included Zeno and Parmenides.

Melissus ’ contribution to philosophy was a treatise of systematic arguments supporting Eleatic philosophy.

Furthermore, because of its clear and concise nature, Melissus ' version of Eleatic philosophy was the chief source for its presentation in the works of Plato and Aristotle.

Although he follows Parmenides in his general views and the framework of Eleaticism, he made original contributions and innovations to the substance of Eleatic philosophy.
