Alfonso XII ( born Alfonso Francisco de Asís Fernando Pío Juan María de la Concepción Gregorio Pelayo ) ( Madrid, 28 November 1857 – El Pardo, 25 November 1885 ) was King of Spain, reigning from 1874 to 1885, after a coup d ' état restored the monarchy and ended the ephemeral First Spanish Republic.

He had stabilised the Allied position at the First Battle of El Alamein, but after a visit in August 1942, the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, replaced him as C-in-C with Alexander and William Gott as commander of the Eighth Army in the Western Desert.

The First Battle of El Alamein ( 1 – 27 July 1942 ) was a battle of the Western Desert Campaign of the Second World War, fought between Axis forces ( Germany and Italy ) of the Panzer Army Africa ( Panzerarmee Afrika ) commanded by Field Marshal ( Generalfeldmarschall ) Erwin Rommel, and Allied ( specifically, British Imperial ) forces ( Britain, British India, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand ) of the British Eighth Army commanded by General Claude Auchinleck.

It was painted and signed by the artist on April 1942, weeks before his death on the first day of the First Battle of El Alamein.

Thus, the Fifth Division was at Al-Ubayyid in Kurdufan ( Central Command ), the Second Division was at Khashm El Girba ( Eastern Command ), the Sixth Division was assigned to Al-Fashir in Darfur ( Western Command ), the First Division was at Juba ( Southern Command ), and the Seventh Division was at As Shajarah just south of Khartoum ( Khartoum Command ).

Rommel continued to advance against delaying actions by the British until halted at First Battle of El Alamein in July.

Auchinlek managed to stop Rommel exhausted with the First Battle of El Alamein.

In July 1942 the First Battle of El Alamein was lost by Rommel because he was suffering from the eternal curse of the desert war, long supply lines.
