This story is narrated in the Gospel of Nicodemus and may be the meaning behind 1 Peter 3: 18-22.
The word docetai ( illusionists ) referring to early groups who denied Jesus's humanity, first occurred in a letter by Bishop Serapion of Antioch ( 197-203 ), who discovered the doctrine in the Gospel of Peter, during a pastoral visit to a Christian community using it in Rhosus, and later condemned it as a forgery.

By the time the Gospels of Luke and Matthew were written, Jesus is portrayed as being the Son of God from the time of birth, and finally the Gospel of John portrays him as the pre-existent Word () as existing " in the beginning ".
Due to recorded predictions of the destruction of the temple, the Gospel of Mark is believed by many critical scholars to have been composed around or shortly after the fall of Jerusalem due to prophecies assumed to be ex post facto regarding the destruction of the temple, and both traditional and critical scholarly consensus maintains that it was the first written of the four canonical gospels.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus referred to himself as the Son of God far more frequently than in the Synoptic Gospels.

The College's founder Eleazar Wheelock designed a seal for his college bearing a striking resemblance to the seal of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, a missionary society founded in London in 1701, in order to maintain the illusion that his college was more for mission work than for higher education.

Nevertheless, Muslim writers sometimes note those elements of the Gospel of Baranabas that stand in accord with standard Qur ' anic teaching, such as the denial of Jesus as being Son of God and the prophetic prediction by Jesus of the coming Messenger of God and, consequently, some Muslims are inclined to regard these specific elements as representing the survival of suppressed early Jesus traditions much more compatible with Islam.
It was here that Mark composed a second more spiritual Gospel and when he died, he left his composition to the Church.
Hence the textual evidence for the Gospel of John is commonly accepted as both earlier and more reliable than that for any other of the canonical Gospels.
Robinson wrote that, where the Gospel narrative accounts can be checked for consistency with surviving material evidence, the account in the Gospel of John is commonly the more plausible ; that it is generally easier to reconcile the various synoptic accounts within John's narrative framework, than it is to explain John's narrative within the framework of any of the synoptics ; and that, where in the Gospel Jesus and his disciples are described as travelling around identifiable locations, the trips in question can always be plausibly followed on the ground, which he says is not the case for any synoptic Gospel.
In John's Gospel, the public ministry of Jesus extends over rather more than two years.
In of the Gospel of John, Jesus, following his encounter with John the Baptist, undertakes an extended and successful baptizing ministry in Judea and on the banks of the River Jordan ; initially as an associate of the Baptist, latterly more as a rival.

Gregory of Nyssa ( c. 335 – 395 ), believed that the Prophet Esaias ( Isaiah ) " knew more perfectly than all others the mystery of the religion of the Gospel.
The Gospel of John then points out that Jesus ' disciples were baptizing more people than John ( John 4: 2 ).
The author of this Gospel is also sometimes presumed to be the author of 1 John, and also, more rarely, of 2 John and 3 John.
