In 1648, preacher John Elliott was quoted in Thomas Shepherd's book " Clear Sunshine of the Gospel " with an account of the difficulties the Pilgrims were having in using the Indians to harvest cranberries as they preferred to hunt and fish.

Gospel of Thomas, usually dated to the late 1st or early 2nd century, was also among the finds in the Nag Hammadi library in 1945.

When the Gospel of Thomas was written, people commonly assumed that men were superior to women, an attitude consistent with the historical context.

The Nag Hammadi codices contain the only complete copy of the Gospel of Thomas.

In fact, Nazareth was described negatively by the evangelists ; the Gospel of Mark argues that Nazareth did not believe in Jesus and therefore he could " do no mighty work there "; in the Gospel of Luke, the Nazarenes are portrayed as attempting to kill Jesus by throwing him off a cliff ; in the Gospel of Thomas, and in all four canonical gospels, we read the famous saying that " a prophet is not without honor except in his own country.

A version of this parable also appears in the non canonical Gospel of Thomas 76.

However, the mention of a treasure in Saying 76 may reflect a source for the Gospel of Thomas in which the parables were adjacent, so that the original pair of parables has been " broken apart, placed in separate contexts, and expanded in a manner characteristic of folklore.

In the Gnostic Acts of Peter and the Twelve, found with the Gospel of Thomas in the Nag Hammadi library, the travelling pearl merchant Lithargoel is eventually revealed to be Jesus.

Thus, " All-In-God " ( see pantheism ) as stated in one of the Sayings of Gospel of Thomas: " Lift Up A Stone And You Will Find Me There ..." This seemingly contradictory interpretation of Gnosticism's theology is not without controversy.

* Saint Thomas, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus, is believed to have landed in Kodungallur, India to preach the Gospel ; the Marthoma Church, the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, the Indian Orthodox Church, and the Assyrian Church of the East claim descent from him.

* 1697-To evangelize the English colonies, Thomas Bray, an Anglican preacher who made several missionary trips to North America, begins laying the groundwork for what will be the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts

These include the apocryphal gospels, such as the Gospel according to the Hebrews, the Gospel of Thomas and the Gospel of Mary Magdalene.

The Gospel According to Thomas, commonly shortened to the Gospel of Thomas, is a well preserved early Christian, non-canonical sayings-gospel which many scholars believe provides insight into the Christian Oral Tradition.

The Gospel of Thomas was found among a collection of fifty-two writings that included, in addition to an excerpt from Plato's Republic, gospels claiming to have been written by Jesus's disciple Philip.

It is important to note, however, that while the Gospel of Thomas does not directly point to Jesus ' divinity, it also does not directly contradict it, and therefore neither supports nor contradicts gnostic beliefs.

Likewise, Jesus Christ proclaims in the Gospel of Matthew that one should " Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's "; that is at first, literally, the payment of taxes as binding those who use the imperial currency, but more widely interpreted as the offer of obedience and submission to the proclaimed worldly king () in matters not contrary to conscience.

Just as the Gospel of John proclaims the universal relevance of the Incarnation of Jesus as Logos, the Pauline view emphasizes the cosmic view that his birth, Crucifixion and Resurrection brought forth a new man and a new world.

In doing so he emphasized that Law binds, convicts, and drives people, while the Gospel proclaims repentance, the promise of grace, eternal life, and proclaims their liberty in Christ.

There are churches for Baptists, Seventh-Day Adventists, Mennonite Church, Trinity Presbyterian Church, Grace Fellowship Community Church, Canyon Family Church, Foursquare Gospel Church, Chinle Potters House, and Catholic Church ( Our Lady of Fatima ), a meetinghouse for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a Kingdom Hall for Jehovah's Witnesses.

The teaching of salvation ( i. e., entering the Kingdom of Heaven ) that is found in The Gospel of Thomas is neither that of " works " nor of " grace " as the dichotomy is found in the canonical gospels, but what might be called a third way, that of insight.

Armstrong proclaimed that behind world events during his lifespan loomed various Biblical prophecies, and that he was called by God as an ' Apostle ' and end-time ' Elijah ' to proclaim the Gospel of God's Kingdom to the World before the return of Jesus Christ.

* Gospel of the Kingdom: Armstrong taught that a reason for Jesus Christ's presence on earth was to proclaim the Gospel message of a literal Kingdom of God that will be established on earth at Christ's ' second coming ', and that the message of the Kingdom should be the focus of the gospel rather than the person of Christ.

A 2007 book also noted the New Life Church — a Newfrontiers evangelical charismatic church — the Kingdom Faith Church, another independent charismatic congregation, and the Full Gospel Church.

Coalville Evangelical Church, an independent church affiliated with the FIEC, can be found on Belvoir Road, and there is a Pentecostal church ( Full Gospel Mission ) on James Street ; Jehovah's Winesses have a modern ' Kingdom Hall ' on Albert Road and there is also a Spiritualist church ( Spiritualists ' National Union ) on Bridge Road.

When Benjamin Wilson retired in 1869 he left his The Gospel Banner to be merged with his nephew Thomas Wilson's Herald of the Coming Kingdom and Bible Instructor, which was renamed in The Restitution in 1871 and published by Thomas Wilson and W. D.

In chapter 62 of the first book of the Great Gospel of John, the mission of Jesus on Earth is described as to invite those from darkness to the Kingdom of love ( via his message of love ).

After being forced out he set up his own group, the League for Social Service ( 1898 – 1916 ), and edited its magazine The Gospel of the Kingdom.

The belief in baptism for all in the Church, including infants, was based on the words in the Gospel according to John: " Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God.

The Kingdom of the Holy Spirit, a new dispensation of universal love, would proceed from the Gospel of Christ, but transcend the letter of it.

The work of Kevin Vanhoozer, Geerhardus Vos ( Biblical Theology: Old and New Testaments ), Herman Ridderbos ( The Coming of the Kingdom ), Meredith Kline ( Kingdom Prologue ) Graeme Goldsworthy ( According to Plan, Gospel and Kingdom ), and Vaughan Roberts ( God's Big Picture ) have helped popularize this approach to the Bible.

Now, if any part of the Bible is assuredly the very Word of God speaking through His servant, it is John's Gospel.

* Nature of grace – Arminians believe that, through grace, God restores free will concerning salvation to all humanity, and each individual, therefore, is able either to accept the Gospel call through faith or resist it through unbelief.

Article 25 of the Thirty-Nine Articles, speaking of the sacraments, says: " Those five commonly called Sacraments, that is to say, Confirmation, Penance, Orders, Matrimony, and extreme Unction, are not to be counted for Sacraments of the Gospel, being such as have grown partly of the corrupt following of the Apostles, partly are states of life allowed in the Scriptures ; but yet have not like nature of Sacraments with Baptism, and the Lord's Supper, for that they have not any visible sign or ceremony ordained of God.

By the time the Gospels of Luke and Matthew were written, Jesus is portrayed as being the Son of God from the time of birth, and finally the Gospel of John portrays him as the pre-existent Word () as existing " in the beginning ".

In the Gospel of John and in Revelation, Jesus is referred to as " the Word of God " (), although the context in Revelation is very different from John.

Contrary to the canonical Christian Gospels, and in accordance with the Islamic view of Jesus, this later " Gospel of Barnabas " states that Jesus was not the son of God, but a prophet and messenger.

The opening words in the Gospel of Mark, namely " The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God " also identify Jesus as both Christ and the Son of God.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus referred to himself as the Son of God far more frequently than in the Synoptic Gospels.

In the Gospel narratives that describe the life of Jesus, the first instance of him being called the Son of God appears during his Baptism by John the Baptist.

In short, the Gospel is news of God the Father's eternal victory over evil, and the promise of salvation and eternal life for all people, through divine grace.

God is thought to be good, just, and merciful ; it would not seem just to condemn someone because they never heard the Gospel message, or were taught a distorted version of the Gospel by heretics.

The main purpose of the epistle to the Romans is given by Paul in, where he reveals that he is set apart by God for the purpose of preaching the Gospel, which he explains.

For there behooved to be that betokening of the Holy Spirit in all tongues, to shew that the Gospel of God was to run through all tongues over the whole earth.

The Gospel also takes a strongly anti-Pauline tone at times, saying in the Italian version's beginning: " many, being deceived of Satan, under pretence of piety, are preaching most impious doctrine, calling Jesus son of God, repudiating the circumcision ordained of God for ever, and permitting every unclean meat: among whom also Paul has been deceived.

There is only one instance where the Gospel of Barnabas might be understood as " correcting " a known canonical pericope, so as to record a prophecy by Jesus of the ( unnamed ) Messenger of God:

Nevertheless, Muslim writers sometimes note those elements of the Gospel of Baranabas that stand in accord with standard Qur ' anic teaching, such as the denial of Jesus as being Son of God and the prophetic prediction by Jesus of the coming Messenger of God and, consequently, some Muslims are inclined to regard these specific elements as representing the survival of suppressed early Jesus traditions much more compatible with Islam.

The Gospel is addressed to the author's patron, Theophilus, which in Greek simply means friend of God or ( be ) loved by God or loving God, and may not be a name but a generic term for a Christian.
