Since 1972, the Roman Catholic Church uses the name " Anointing of the Sick " both in the English translations issued by the Holy See of its official documents in Latin and in the English official documents of Episcopal conferences.

Anointing may also be given during Forgiveness Vespers and Great Week, on Great and Holy Wednesday, to all who are prepared.

Other rites such as Confirmation, Ordination, Holy Matrimony, Funerals, and Anointing of the Sick are performed but are not considered sacraments.

In the Russian Orthodox Church, during the Coronation of the Tsar, the Anointing took place just before the receipt of Holy Communion, toward the end of the service.

After the Anointing, the Tsar alone was taken through the Holy Doors ( an action normally reserved only for bishops or priests ) and received Holy Communion at a small table set next to the Holy Table, or altar.

Among Eastern Orthodox Churches, the Myron ( Μύρον, Holy Oil ) for Chrismation ( and, prior to the 20th century, for the Anointing of monarchs ) is prepared periodically by the Orthodox Patriarchates ( such as the Church of Constantinople -- see an announcement and process for preparation, with some sample dates of preparation ) and by the various heads of autocephalous churches ( such as the Orthodox Church in America -- see photos of the process ).

Anointing is not only used by Pentecostal churches but by many other denominations to describe the work of the Holy Spirit among believers.

In this Mass the bishop blesses separate oils for the sick ( used in Anointing of the Sick ), for catechumens ( used in Baptism ) and chrism ( used in Baptism, but especially in Confirmation and Holy Orders, as well as in rites such as the blessing of an altar and a church ).

In many churches, especially Greek Orthodox, a service of Anointing ( Holy Unction ) is held on Wednesday evening, following the Presanctified Liturgy.

The Ecclesia Gnostica recognizes five initiatory sacraments as listed in the Gospel of Philip: Baptism, Chrism or Confirmation, Eucharist, Redemption ( sacrament ) and Bride-Chamber, with the additional two sustaining sacraments of Holy Orders and Anointing of the Sick.

The beliefs of the Schwarzenau Brethren include triune baptism, which provides that the candidate kneel in water and be immersed, face first, three times in the name of God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit ; the New Testament as the infallible guide in spiritual matters ; communion service celebrated in the evening, accompanied by the love feast ; the ceremony of the washing of feet ; the salutation of the Holy kiss ; prayer and Anointing with oil over the sick ; and Nonresistance.

This canon allows Catholics who are unable to approach a Catholic minister to receive, under certain conditions, the sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist and Anointing of the Sick from " non-Catholic ministers ministers in whose Churches these sacraments are valid ", and declares it licit for Catholic priests to administer the same three sacraments to members of Churches which the Holy See judges to be in the same condition in regard to the sacraments as the Eastern Churches, if they ask for the sacraments of their own accord and are properly disposed.

The presbyterium is most visible during the ordination of new priests and bishops and the Mass of the Chrism: the Holy Thursday Mass where the blessing of the oils used in the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, Anointing of the Sick, and Holy Orders takes place.

To explain this discrepancy it is claimed that one of two things occurred: Either the container of Holy Anointing Oil miraculously multiplied when supply became low ( as did the cruise of oil mentioned in the story of Elijah and the widow woman or the oil that lasted for eight days without being consumed during the Jewish Chanukka ) or, following new oil was added to the old, thus continuing the original oil for all time.

The Holy Anointing Oil of the Armenian Church is called the Holy Muron.

The Consecration of the Oil, when performed, occurs during Holy Week, and thereafter the Oil is distributed to the Orthodox parishes and monasteries under the authority of that ecclesiastical jurisdiction.

It consists of seven prayers, at the end of which every member of the congregation is anointed with Holy Oil.

Both the Oil of Unction and the Holy Leaven are referred to as “ leaven ” although there is no actual leavening agent, so the nomenclature Holy Leaven seems to be a bit misleading.

In the Roman Catholic ( Latin: sacri ordines ), Eastern Catholic, Eastern Orthodox ( ιερωσύνη, ιεράτευμα, Священство ), Oriental Orthodox, Anglican, Assyrian, Old Catholic, Independent Catholic churches and some Lutheran churches Holy Orders comprise the three orders of bishop, priest and deacon, or the sacrament or rite by which candidates are ordained to those orders.

The Assyrian Church of the East, officially the Holy Apostolic Catholic Assyrian Church of the East ʻIttā Qaddishtā w-Shlikhāitā Qattoliqi d-Madnĕkhā d-Āturāyē ), is a Syriac Church historically centered in Mesopotamia.

This joint synodal decree provides that ( 1 ) Assyrian faithful may participate and receive Holy Communion in a Chaldean celebration of the Holy Eucharist, ( 2 ) Chaldean faithful may participate and receive Holy Communion in an Assyrian celebration of the Holy Eucharist, even if celebrated using the Anaphora of Addai and Mari in its original form, and ( 3 ) Assyrian clergy are invited ( but not obliged ) to insert the institution narrative into the Anaphora of Addai and Mari when Chaldean faithful are present.

Thus it permits Eastern Christians who are not in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church ( Eastern Orthodox Church, Oriental Orthodoxy and Assyrian Church of the East ) to receive Communion from Roman Catholic ministers, if they request it of their own accord and are properly disposed, and it applies the same rule also to some Western Churches that the Holy See judges to be in a situation similar to that of Eastern Christians with regard to the sacraments.

On the 20 July 2001, the Holy See issued a document, in agreement with the Assyrian Church of the East, named Guidelines for admission to the Eucharist between the Chaldean Church and the Assyrian Church of the East, which confirmed also the validity of the Anaphora of Addai and Mari.

For ten years he studied intensively with Dr. George M. Lamsa, Th. D., ( 1890-1975 ), Assyrian biblical scholar and translator of the Holy Bible from the Ancient Eastern Text.

The Holy Apostolic Catholic Assyrian Church of the East.

The Assyrian Church has two types of holy oils ; the one is ordinary olive oil, blessed or not blessed, the other is the oil of the Holy Horn which is believed to have been handed down from the Apostles.

Today the Holy Qurbana of Addai and Mari is used in the Ancient Church of the East, Assyrian Church of the East, the Chaldean Church, and the Syro-Malabar Church of Kerala, India.

Since the Catholic Church expresses such desire that the Sacred Scriptures be read, the following taken from the Holy Bible ( New Catholic Edition ) will prove a means of grace and a source of great spiritual blessing.

The Anglican Communion considers itself to be part of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church and to be both Catholic and Reformed.

The Eastern Orthodox Church dedicates several days throughout the year to the dead, mostly on Saturdays, because of Jesus ' resting in the Holy Sepulchre on that day.

The teaching of the Eastern Orthodox Church on the Holy Mystery ( sacrament ) of Unction is similar to that of the Roman Catholic Church.

Adjacent to the Forum, at the junction of the same cardo, and the other decumanus, Hadrian built a large temple to the goddess Venus, which later became the Church of the Holy Sepulchre ; despite 11th century destruction, which resulted in the modern Church having a much smaller footprint, several boundary walls of Hadrian's temple have been found among the archaeological remains beneath the Church.

According to the writer Timothy Dufort, by 1969, all Church of England bishops had acquired Old Catholic lines of apostolic succession recognised by the Holy See.

The Holy See accepts as valid the ordinations of the Old Catholics in communion with Utrecht, as well as the Polish National Catholic Church ( which received its orders directly from Utrecht, and was — until recently — part of that communion ); but Roman Catholicism does not recognise the orders of any group whose teaching is at variance with what they consider the core tenets of Christianity ; this is the case even though the clergy of the Independent Catholic groups may use the proper ordination ritual.

In the Church of England, readings from Lamentations are used at Morning and Evening Prayer on the Monday and Tuesday of Holy Week, and at Evening Prayer on Good Friday.
