The array was built at the Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory by the Cavendish Astrophysics Group and Jodrell Bank Observatory, and was funded by PPARC ( now STFC ).
It was closed down when its funding was withdrawn by PPARC in 2005.

In 2007 CCLRC and PPARC were merged to form the Science and Technology Facilities Council ( STFC ), with responsibility for nuclear physics being transferred from EPSRC to STFC.
