On 1 April 2007 CCLRC merged with PPARC to form the Science and Technology Facilities Council so that a single organisation was responsible for providing UK scientists with access to large scientific facilities in the UK and elsewhere in the world, including CERN, ESA and ESO.

The Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council ( or PPARC ) was one of a number of Research Councils in the United Kingdom.

In 1994, the new Director General of Research Councils was charged with reorganization of the four existing research councils, and this resulted in the SERC being split into the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council ( PPARC ), the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council ( EPSRC ) and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council ( BBSRC ).

In order to prioritise economic impact over blue skies research, the SRC became the Science and Engineering Research Council ( SERC ) in the early 1980s, and in 1994, the SERC was eventually divided into three Research Councils ( the EPSRC, PPARC and the CCLRC — which took responsibility for RAL from EPSRC in 1995 ), so that each could then focus its development around one of three incompatible business models — administratively efficient short duration grant distribution, medium term commitments to international agreements, long term commitments to staff and facilities provision.

The array was built at the Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory by the Cavendish Astrophysics Group and Jodrell Bank Observatory, and was funded by PPARC ( now STFC ).

It was closed down when its funding was withdrawn by PPARC in 2005.

In 2007 CCLRC and PPARC were merged to form the Science and Technology Facilities Council ( STFC ), with responsibility for nuclear physics being transferred from EPSRC to STFC.

In order to unify the planning of the provision for UK scientists to access large national and international facilities, in 2007 the CCLRC merged with PPARC and incorporated the nuclear physics discipline from EPSRC to create the Science and Technology Facilities Council which then took responsibility for RAL.

The two Observatories were moved under the aegis of PPARC, and the Laboratories initially into EPSRC and later into their own organization, the Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils ( CCLRC ).

The PPARC / STFC funded two projects: GridPP ( phase 1 for £ 17 million, phase 2 for £ 5. 9 million, phase 3 for £ 30 million and a 4th phase running from 2011 to 2014 ) and Astrogrid (£ 14 million over 3 phases ).
