He had been a descendant of the Israelite tribe of Issachar ; he had been educated by his grandfathers, who had both been physicians to the court of Good King René of Provence ; he had attended Montpellier University in 1525 to gain his first degree: after returning there in 1529 he had successfully taken his medical doctorate ; he had gone on to lecture in the Medical Faculty there until his views became too unpopular ; he had supported the heliocentric view of the universe ; he had travelled to the north-east of France, where he had composed prophecies at the abbey of Orval ; in the course of his travels he had performed a variety of prodigies, including identifying a future Pope ; he had successfully cured the Plague at Aix-en-Provence and elsewhere ; he had engaged in scrying using either a magic mirror or a bowl of water ; he had been joined by his secretary Chavigny at Easter 1554 ; having published the first installment of his Propheties, he had been summoned by Queen Catherine de ' Medici to Paris in 1556 to discuss with her his prophecy at quatrain I. 35 that her husband King Henri II would be killed in a duel ; he had examined the royal children at Blois ; he had bequeathed to his son a ' lost book ' of his own prophetic paintings ; he had been buried standing up ; and he had been found, when dug up at the French Revolution, to be wearing a medallion bearing the exact date of his disinterment.

This is perhaps the basis for Internet reports in the late 1990s about the supposed discovery of Pope John's diary in which he allegedly wrote about receiving prophetic insight into the future, including the return of Jesus in New York in 2000.

Although Pope John did have a diary, there is no evidence in it to suggest that he received apocalyptic visions of the future.

In 1197 he became tutor of the future Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, who had been given as ward to Pope Innocent III by the Empress-widow Constance of Sicily.

In July 1276, he was one of the three cardinals whom Pope Adrian V sent to Viterbo with instructions to treat with the German King, Rudolf I of Habsburg, concerning his imperial coronation at Rome and his future relations towards Charles of Anjou, whom papal policy supported.

The Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences was established by Pope John Paul II on 1 January 1994 ( AAS 86, 213 ), with the aim of promoting the study and progress of the social sciences, primarily economics, sociology, law and political science.

In October 1948, as the 1948 Arab – Israeli War was in progress, Pope Pius XII, deeply disturbed by that violent conflict, issued the encyclical " In Multiplicibus Curis ", in which he called on the peace-makers to give Jerusalem and its outskirts " an international character " and to assure-" with international guarantees "-freedom of access and worship at the holy places scattered throughout Palestine.

Pope Pius 12, declared in 1951 that it is possible to be exempt from the normal obligation of parenthood for a long time and even for the whole duration of married life, if there are serious reasons, such as those often mentioned in the so-called medical, eugenic, economic and social `` indications ''.

Distributism ( also known as distributionism or distributivism ) is an economic philosophy that developed in England in the early 20th century based upon the principles of Catholic social teaching, especially the teachings of Pope Leo XIII in his encyclical Rerum Novarum and Pope Pius XI in Quadragesimo Anno.

Pope Pius XI further stated, again in Quadragesimo Anno, " every social activity ought of its very nature to furnish help to the members of the body social, and never destroy and absorb them.

Two Papal encyclicals, Rerum Novarum ( 1891 ) of Pope Leo XIII, and Quadragesimo Anno ( 1931 ) of Pope Pius XI, offered a basis for social and political doctrine.

The Pope advocated that the role of the State was to promote social justice through the protection of rights, while the Church must speak out on social issues in order to teach correct social principles and ensure class harmony.

* The encyclical Quadragesimo Anno ( On Reconstruction of the Social Order, literally " in the fortieth year ") of 1931 by Pope Pius XI, encourages a living wage, subsidiarity, and advocates that social justice is a personal virtue as well as an attribute of the social order, saying that society can be just only if individuals and institutions are just.

Bishop Jacques Gaillot of Évreux in France was placed in this titular see by Pope John Paul II as disciplinary action for having expressed too loudly liberal positions on political and social matters ; and heterodox opinions on religious matters.

However, writers such as Pope used their gift for satire to create scathing works responding to their detractors or to criticise what they saw as social atrocities perpetrated by the government.

Maurin was deeply versed in the writings of the Church Fathers and the papal documents on social matters which had been issued by Pope Leo XIII and his successors.
