By the fourth century, the Goths conquered Dacia, and were divided into at least two distinct groups separated by the Dniester River, the Thervingi, led by the Balti dynasty, and the Greuthungi, led by the Amali dynasty.

At the time, there were at least two groups of Goths: the Thervingi and the Greuthungi.

These Goths, more specifically the Thervingi, were at the time under the leadership of Athanaric and had apparently remained peaceful since their defeat under Constantine in 332.

Alavivus most likely remained a hostage, but Fritigern was able to escape and he became leader of the Thervingi.

Under pressure of the Huns, the chieftain Fritigern approached the Eastern Roman Emperor Valens in 376 with a portion of the Thervingi and asked to be allowed to settle with his people on the south bank of the Danube.

The earliest sources that mention Fritigern originate from the period in which Valens, emperor of the Roman Empire, attacked the Thervingi ( 367-369 ) and from the period in which the Huns raided the Thervingi ( ca.

This is deduced by historians from the fact that Athanaric would later lead the Thervingi in battle against the Huns in 376.

While Fritigern asked Valens to allow the Thervingi to cross the northern Roman border and settle in Moesia or Thracia, with the Danube River and Roman frontier forts protecting them from the Huns, ( thus this was a form of asylum ), Athanaric and many of his followers retreated to Caucaland ( probably Transylvania ).

Though the situation had stabilized temporarily by the time of Constantine, waves of non-Roman peoples, most prominently the Thervings, Greuthungs and Huns, began to cross into the territory, first ( in the case of the Thervingi ) as refugees with imperial permission to take shelter from their foes the Huns, then later as invaders.

An enormous coalition consisting of Goths ( Greuthungi and Thervingi ), Gepids and Peucini, led again by the Heruli, assembled at the mouth of river Tyras ( Dniester ).

Turning on their hosts after decades of servitude and simmering hostility, Thervingi under Fritigern and later Visigoths under Alaric I eventually conquered and laid waste the entire Balkan region before moving westward to invade Italy itself.

In 377, a famine hit the areas settled by the Thervingi, and their appeals for help went unanswered.

Both the Greuthungi and Thervingi became heavily Romanized during the 4th century.

As a consequence the Thervingi soon held sway over much of the neighboring, richer province of Thracia.
