Because of the treaty, Limerick is sometimes known as the Treaty City.

James's loss of nerve and speedy exit from the battlefield enraged his Irish supporters, who fought on until the Treaty of Limerick in 1691 ; he was derisively nicknamed Seamus a ' chaca (" James the shit ") in Irish.

Without prospect of further French assistance the capitulation at Limerick finally sealed victory for William III and his supporters in Ireland with the signing of the Treaty of Limerick on 3 October ( O. S ).

The Flight of the Wild Geese refers to the departure of an Irish Jacobite army under the command of Patrick Sarsfield from Ireland to France, as agreed in the Treaty of Limerick on October 3, 1691, following the end of the Williamite War in Ireland.

A year later, after the Irish Jacobites under Patrick Sarsfield surrendered at the Treaty of Limerick in 1691, they were allowed to leave Ireland for service in the French Army.

Under the terms of the Treaty of Limerick in 1691, which ended the war between King James II and VII and King William III in Ireland, a separate force of 12, 000 Jacobites had arrived in France in an event known as Flight of the Wild Geese.
