The estate was conveniently located within easy walking distance of Bletchley railway station, where the " Varsity Line " between the cities of Oxford and Cambridge – whose universities supplied many of the code-breakers – met the ( then-LMS ) main West Coast railway line between London and Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow.

Chiltern Railways has confirmed that instead its connection to Oxford will be by building a short connection at Bicester to link the Chiltern Main Line with the Varsity Line.

The town formerly had its own railway station on the " Varsity Line " ( Oxford / Cambridge ), with a spur to Aylesbury ( from Verney Junction ).

It was this later route that formed part of the " Varsity Line " from Oxford to Cambridge, and legend has it that the station was so called because the then isolation of the area meant that the only obvious name was that of the local landowner.

The permanent way from Quainton Road to its connection with the Varsity Line has been closed and lifted.

It is planned to re-open the Varsity Line in about 2017 but Verney Junction station would remain closed as it would serve no significant settlement.

Bletchley grew from an obscure hamlet on the road from Fenny Stratford to Buckingham with the arrival of the London and North Western Railway in 1845 and its subsequent junction with the Oxford-Cambridge Varsity Line shortly afterwards.

The line through the station may once again see trains running, as there are proposals to run services north of Aylesbury to Milton Keynes and Bedford on the Varsity Line.

From 1851 to 1967, Swanbourne had its own railway station on the Varsity Line, about from the village and half way to Little Horwood.

Potton railway station, which opened in 1862 and served the Varsity Line between Oxford to Cambridge, was closed in 1968.

Oxford Road Halt on the former Varsity Line, south of the centre of Kidlington, was opened by the London and North Western Railway in 1905 and closed by its successor the London, Midland and Scottish Railway in 1926.

The London and North Western Railway opened on the Varsity Line just south of the railway bridge on First Turn in 1905.

It is one of two surviving passenger-carrying sections of the " Varsity Line " between Oxford and Cambridge.

The Marston Vale Line is one of the few remaining parts of the Varsity Line still in use.

In the 2011 Autumn Statement the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, announced the allocation of £ 270 million for the East West Rail Consortium to reinstate the Oxford — Bletchley — Bedford section of the Varsity Line.

He returned his career best figures of 6 – 78 in the 1895 Varsity match, and he twice took ten wickets in a match: 5 – 75 and 5 – 102 for the Gentlemen against I Zingari in 1895, and 5 – 81 and 5 – 66 for Sussex against Nottinghamshire in 1896 ( a match in which he also scored 89 and 65 ).

In 1999, he starred in the teen football drama / sports film Varsity Blues, which held the number 1 spot at the US Box Office for its first two weeks.

( They would have participated in Operation Varsity, which would have been three combat jumps, but SHAEF decided to use the 17th Airborne instead.

Varsity basketball and volleyball are currently played in the Lions Den gymnasium at the University Center, which seats 400 and is the smallest venue in all Division II schools, the size of many smaller high school gymnasiums.

The family of Frank Gordy, proprietor of The Varsity, owned much of the land, and the part where the one-building Chattahoochee Tech campus now sits was donated to the county, which in turn provided the land for the state technical college.

He subsequently played in two more Varsity matches as a middle-order batsman in the second of which he stood in as wicket-keeper.
