The patella ( kneecap ) is the bone in front of the knee.

The knee is a hinge type synovial joint, which is composed of three functional compartments: the femoropatellar articulation consists of the patella, or " kneecap ", and the patellar groove on the front of the femur through which it slides ; and the medial and lateral femorotibial articulations linking the femur, or thigh bone, with the tibia, the main bone of the lower leg.

Patellar Lunation, also known as luxating patella, refers to the dislocation of the kneecap.

It occurs when, through either malformation or trauma, the ridges forming the patellar groove in the knee are not prominent and are too shallow to allow the patella to properly sit securely.

This can cause the patella to " luxate " ( jump out of the groove ) sideways which will cause the leg to lock up with the foot off the ground.
