The poetic works of Alcaeus were collected into ten books, with elaborate commentaries, by the Alexandrian scholars Aristophanes of Byzantium and Aristarchus of Samothrace sometime in the 3rd century BC, and yet his verses today exist only in fragmentary form, varying in size from mere phrases, such as wine, window into a man ( fr. 333 ) to entire groups of verses and stanzas, such as those quoted below ( fr. 346 ).

Of its four stanzas, Housman tells us that two were ' given ' him ready made ; one was coaxed forth from his subconsciousness an hour or two later ; the remaining one took months of conscious composition.

One of the most common manifestations of stanzaic form in poetry in English ( and in other Western European languages ) is represented in texts for church hymns, such as the first three stanzas ( of nine ) from a poem by Isaac Watts ( from 1719 ) cited immediately below ( in this case, each stanza is to be sung to the same hymn tune, composed earlier by William Croft in 1708 ):

Valhalla is attested in the Poetic Edda, compiled in the 13th century from earlier traditional sources, the Prose Edda, written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson, Heimskringla, also written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson, and in stanzas of an anonymous 10th century poem commemorating the death of a Eric Bloodaxe known as Eiríksmál as compiled in Fagrskinna.

From stanzas 22 to 24, more details are given by Odin about Valhalla: the holy doors of the ancient gate Valgrind stand before Valhalla, Valhalla has five hundred and forty doors that eight hundred men can exit from at once ( from which the einherjar will flow forth to engage the wolf Fenrir at Ragnarök ).

In stanzas 40 to 42, Helgi has returned to Midgard from Valhalla with a host of men.

Two stanzas from Grímnismál are then cited in support.

Igor Stravinsky composed a work titled simply Cantata in 1951 – 52, which used stanzas from the 15th-century " Lyke-wake Dirge " as a narrative frame for other anonymous English lyrics, and later designated A Sermon, a Narrative, and a Prayer ( 1961 ) as " a cantata for alto and tenor soli, speaker, chorus, and orchestra ".

Taken together, several stanzas from four poems collected in the Poetic Edda refer to Ymir as a primeval being who was born from venom that dripped from the icy rivers Élivágar and lived in the grassless void of Ginnungagap.

The Roman poet Horace modelled his own lyrical compositions on those of Alcaeus, rendering the Lesbian poet's verse-forms, including ' Alcaic ' and ' Sapphic ' stanzas, into concise Latin-an achievement he celebrates in his third book of odes.

In many forms of poetry, stanzas are interlocking, so that the rhyming scheme or other structural elements of one stanza determine those of succeeding stanzas.

Only four stanzas found on those pages are still extant, all of which are quoted in the Volsungasaga.

The poem consists of 51 stanzas recounting a dream sequence in which the poet first sees historical and mythological figures being punished for their vices or their failure to act, and later sees those figures who have earned a place on Mount Parnassus for their virtues ; principal among those praised is the marqués de Santillana.

Some late paper manuscripts contain about five more stanzas, those are thought to be of young origin.
