In mammals it is usually referred to as the superior colliculus, and its best-studied function is to direct eye movements.

The superior colliculus is part of the midbrain.

Instead of a one or two step chain of processing, the visual signals pass through perhaps a dozen stages of integration, involving the thalamus, cerebral cortex, basal ganglia, superior colliculus, cerebellum, and several brainstem nuclei.

Others send axons to the superior colliculus.

It also projects to the superior colliculus, the suprachiasmatic nucleus, and the nucleus of the optic tract.
