Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche ( Wylie: Chos rgyam Drung pa ; February 28, 1939 – April 4, 1987 ) was a Buddhist meditation master and holder of both the Kagyu and Nyingma lineages, the eleventh Trungpa tülku, a tertön, supreme abbot of the Surmang monasteries, scholar, teacher, poet, artist, and originator of a radical re-presentation of Shambhala vision.

Born in the Kham region of Tibet in February 1939, Chögyam Trungpa was eleventh in the line of Trungpa tülkus, important figures in the Kagyu lineage, one of the four main schools of Tibetan Buddhism.

Chögyam Trungpa was also trained in the Nyingma tradition, the oldest of the four schools, and was an adherent of the ri-mé (" nonsectarian ") ecumenical movement within Tibetan Buddhism, which aspired to bring together and make available all the valuable teachings of the different schools, free of sectarian rivalry.

Trungpa was one of the first teachers to introduce the esoteric practice of the Vajrayana to the West.

According to Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso, " The one who mainly spread the Vajrayana in the West was Trungpa Rinpoche.

According to Trungpa, it was his intention to propagate the kingdom of Shambala that provided the necessary inspiration to leave his homeland and make the arduous journey to India and the West.

Upon the death of Chögyam Trungpa, the leadership of Vajradhatu was first carried on by his American disciple, appointed regent and Dharma heir, Ösel Tendzin ( Thomas Rich ), and then by Trungpa's eldest son and Shambhala heir, Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche.

The next Trungpa tülku, Chokyi Sengay, was recognized in 1991 by Tai Situ Rinpoche.

While his companion was not seriously injured, Trungpa was left partially paralyzed.

Although he had not gone through the several years ' worth of study and preparatory mind training required, Merwin was insistent he attend, and Trungpa eventually granted his request – along with his girlfriend as well.

At the Halloween party, after many, including Trungpa himself, had taken off their clothes, Merwin was asked to join the event, but refused.

Author Jeffery Paine commented on this incident that "( s ) eeing Merwin out of step with the rest, Trungpa could have asked him to leave, but decided it was kinder to shock him out of his aloofness.

He was teacher in Residence at Shambhala Mountain Center from 1996 – 2004, and co-founded the Dharma Ocean Foundation, a non-profit educational organization dedicated to the practice, study and preservation of the teachings of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and the practice lineage he embodied.

It was during his years in graduate school that Ray first encountered his main teacher, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and began a seventeen year apprenticeship with him ended by Rinpoche ’ s death in 1987.

In 1969 Ray encountered Chögyam Trunpa ’ s autobiography entitled “ Born in Tibet .” In an unpublished interview Ray recounts knowing immediately that this was his teacher, though he had to wait until 1970 for Trungpa to arrive in the U. S. in order to meet him.

At the time of Trungpa Rinpoche ’ s death in 1987, Ray was professor of Buddhist Studies at Naropa University with, in addition, a half-time appointment in the Religious studies department at the University of Colorado.

In 2005 Dharma Ocean Foundation was launched as the educational nonprofit through which Trungpa Rinpoche ’ s teachings would be disseminated via Ray, and in 2006 Shambhala International made the separation official.

Controversial lama Chögyam Trungpa, the founder of the Shambhala meditation movement, claimed in his teachings that his intention was to strip the ethnic baggage away from traditional methods of working with the mind and to deliver the essence of those teachings to his western students.

He was a friend and co-religionist of Allen Ginsberg, both students of Chögyam Trungpa, the Tibetan Buddhist teacher.

Both the Nalandabodhi sangha, which was founded by The Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche, and the Shambhala sanghas founded by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche have stated that they are welcoming of all sexual orientations.

According to a former student, Stephen Butterfield, " Trungpa told us that if we ever tried to leave the Vajrayana, we would suffer unbearable, subtle, continuous anguish, and disasters would pursue us like furies " Other Vajrayana teachers, as well, also warn their students about the dangers of the esoteric path.

Trungpa also founded more than 100 meditation centers throughout the world.

Chögyam Trungpa also received support from one of his own main teachers, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, head of the Nyingma lineage.

" However, he also notes the outrage felt in particular by poets such as Robert Bly and Kenneth Rexroth, who began calling Trungpa a fascist.

In addition to increasingly teaching programs with and for Chögyam Trungpa, Ray also served on the Nalanda Translation Committee, which translated many texts from Tibetan into English.

At this time and for the next eight years, he continued as an academic teacher also teaching courses on meditation to Trungpa ’ s sangha.

Chögyam Trungpa also founded Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado in 1974.

This term was also used by Buddhist teacher Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche as a Sanskrit equivalent of the Tibet term Dzogpa chenpo, although this back-translation is unconventional and did not catch on more widely.

He also recognized Choseng Trungpa, born on February 6, 1989 in eastern Tibet, as the reincarnation of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche.

A lineage was also transmitted from Kobun Chino Roshi to the Tibetan Buddhist sangha of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and is now practiced at all Shambhala retreat centers.

Shambhala Art is also an international non-profit arts education program based on the Dharma Art teachings of the late Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, the founder of Shambhala.

The 1st Trungpa Rinpoche, Kunga Gyaltsen, was a principal student of Trungmase ( the 1st Zurmang Gharwang Rinpoche, also wellknown as Matiratna, or as Lodro Rinchen, which was given by the 5th H. H.

The Foundation was also responsible for the arrangements and logistics of the 2001 visit of Trungpa Tulku XI's son, Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche.

As described in the 1977 article in " Garuda V ", which also reproduces the proclamation ( signed by Trungpa XI and Karmapa XVI ), Trungpa empowered Thomas Rich " as his regent and as a holder of the Kagyu and Nyingma lineages ".

" However, she said had she known that Trungpa began having sexual relations with women at age thirteen, she would not have declined, considering that in the higher stages of Tibetan Buddhist tantra, sexual relations ( especially with tertöns ) are a means of enhancing spiritual insights.

The three famous Tulkus from Zurmang are well known with the name GharTengTrungSum ( Gharwang, Tenga, Trungpa Rinpoche ).

The 3 heads of Zurmang Kagyud are known as GharTengTrungSum ( Gharwang, Tenga, Trungpa ), and the lineage holder of Zurmang Kagyud is Zurmang Gharwang Rinpoche.

From 1959-1963, by appointment of the Dalai Lama, Chögyam Trungpa served as the spiritual advisor for the Young Lamas Home School in Dalhousie, India.

Upon moving to the United States in 1970, Trungpa traveled around North America, gaining renown for his unique ability to present the essence of the highest Buddhist teachings in a form readily understandable to western students.

Ani Pema first met Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche in 1972, and at the urging of Chime Rinpoche, she took him as her root guru (" Ani " is a Tibetan honorific for a nun ).

Reginald " Reggie " Ray is a leading Buddhist academic and Vajra Master, teaching and practicing in the lineage of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche for forty years.

Founded in 1974 by Tibetan Buddhist teacher and Oxford University scholar Chögyam Trungpa, it is named for the eleventh-century Indian Buddhist sage Naropa, an abbot of Nalanda.

Trungpa asked Marvin Casper to restructure the Maitri program for use at Naropa as a full-fledged graduate degree program in contemplative psychology.

) Merwin and Naone resisted, whereupon members of Trungpa ’ s “ Vajra Guard ” ( security ) stripped them naked, despite their protests and calls for the police.

Keyes lived for a few months with two students who had been influenced by Trungpa and Ram Dass.

A turning point came for Keyes when he visited Trungpa at his center in Barnet, Vermont at Christmas 1970 and discussed with Trungpa the Buddhist notion that the mind's reaction rather than external circumstances creates personal unhappiness.

Chögyam Trungpa, a Tibetan Buddhist lama, used the " Shambhala " name for certain of his teachings, practices, and organizations ( e. g. Shambhala Training, Shambhala International, Shambhala Publications ), referring to the root of human goodness and aspiration.

Similarly, the famous Kagyu and Nyingma Trungpa tülku, tertön, abbot and meditation master Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche – well-known for introducing Vajrayana teachings to the Occident, founding Naropa University ( the first accredited Buddhist university in the United States ), creating the system of Shambhala Training and for his friendship with many important figures of the Beat movement – practiced and espoused for his students what he deemed " mindful drinking ".

The term Shambhala Buddhism was introduced by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche in the year 2000 to describe his presentation of the Shambhala teachings, originally conceived by Chögyam Trungpa as secular practices for achieving enlightened society, in concert with the Tibetan Buddhist Kagyu and Nyingma lineages.

Trungpa Rinpoche requested that the Kagyu Kalachakra master Kalu Rinpoche perform the initiation for his Vajrayana students, which he did in 1986 in Boulder, Colorado.

The Dorje Kasung is a group that was formed by Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche to support the transmission of the Shambhala teachings by helping to create an appropriate environment for them to be taught in.
