He was born at Florence to a family of artists, and was apprenticed to a goldsmith, but became an engraver working briefly under Orazio Vanni and then Cesare Dandini.

In March 1999, in Operation Rana Gosa, the government tried invading the Vanni from the south.

After the Abbé Pierre's death in January 2007, Italian magistrate Carlo Mastelloni recalled in the Corriere della Sera that the Abbé Pierre had " spontaneously testified " in the 1980s in support of a group of Italian activists who had fled to Paris and were involved with the Hyperion language school, directed by Vanni Mulinaris.

It houses a 1390 Annunciation by Giovanni di Bartolomeo Cristiani, a 16th century Forentine school St. Benedict with the Redeemer and, in the cloister, Histories of the Order of the Knights of St. Benedict by Giovan Battista Vanni ( 1660 ).

Nello di Vanni is conjectured to be identical with Bernardo Nello or Giovanni Falcone.

The " Elephant Man ", Joseph Carey Merrick ( 1862 – 1890 ) became well known in Whitechapel — he was exhibited in a shop on the Whitechapel Road before being helped by Dr Frederick Treves ( 1853 – 1923 ) at the Royal London Hospital, opposite the actual shop.

Treves was from a medical family, his father was a physician and his great uncle was Frederick Treves, the surgeon who became famous for discovering Joseph Merrick, the " Elephant Man ".

The rooms were adapted and furnished to suit Merrick, with a specially constructed bed and — at Treves ' instruction — no mirrors.
