Wang Mang was the son of Wang Man ( 王曼 ), the younger brother of Empress Wang Zhengjun, and his wife Qu ( 渠, family name unknown ), born in 45 BC.

The sole emperor of the Xin Dynasty, Wang Mang ( 王莽 ), was the nephew of Grand Empress Dowager Wang Zhengjun.

His father, Emperor Xuan, was concerned, so he had his wife, Empress Wang ( unrelated to Wang Zhengjun ) select the most beautiful of the young ladies in waiting and had them sent to Crown Prince Shi.
