Warmoth and Carter formed rival militias and the two were ready for war, President Grant issued orders through the War Department for Emory to use troops if necessary.

On December 14, Attorney General Williams informed Warmoth that President Grant recognized Kellogg as the rightful elected governor of Louisiana.

Warmoth appointed Democrats as parish registrars who ensured the voter rolls included as many whites and as few freedmen as possible.

Warmoth issued commissions to Fusionist Alphonse Cazabat and Christopher Columbus Nash, elected parish judge and sheriff, respectively.

Snyder, 20 ) were killed by compressive asphyxia and 26 other persons were injured in a rush for seating at the opening of a sold-out rock concert by the English rock band The Who.

Grant gave generous terms ; Confederate troops surrendered their weapons and were allowed to return to their homes, with their mounts, on the condition that they would not take up arms against the United States.

" Regarding the new President, Andrew Johnson, Grant commented to Julia that he dreaded the change in administrations ; he judged Johnson's attitude toward white southerners as one that would " make them unwilling citizens ", and initially thought that with Johnson " Reconstruction has been set back no telling how far.

Rawlin's response was that while Grant was a loyal member of the Republican Party, he would be unable to serve as president for financial reasons, since he would lose his lifetime military pension upon ascendancy to the White House, and the presidency did not provide any such income benefit.

By becoming President under current terms, Grant would at best leave the office at age 56 with no income, assuming he served two terms.
