Ordained in the Church of England in 1764, Newton became curate of Olney, Buckinghamshire, where he began to write hymns with poet William Cowper.

In many Christadelphian hymn books a sizeable proportion of hymns are drawn from the Scottish Psalter and non-Christadelphian hymn-writers including Isaac Watts, Charles Wesley, William Cowper and John Newton.

Amongst modernists still publishing were Wallace Stevens, Gottfried Benn, T. S. Eliot, Anna Akhmatova, William Faulkner, Dorothy Richardson, John Cowper Powys, and Ezra Pound.

The Olney Hymns () were first published in February 1779, and are the combined work of curate John Newton ( 1725 – 1807 ) and his poet friend, William Cowper ( 1731 – 1800 ).

William Cowper was the son of an Anglican clergyman and well-educated at Westminster School.

In 1785, the English poet William Cowper wrote:

Or, The Anatomy of a Male Opossum: In a Letter to Dr Edward Tyson ," from Mr William Cowper, Chirurgeon, and Fellow of the Royal Society, London, by Edward Tyson, M. D. Fellow of the College of Physicians and of the Royal Society.

His biographies include the life and works of John Bunyan, John Wesley, William Cowper, Oliver Cromwell and Horatio Nelson.

The almanac contained copies of his correspondence with Jefferson, poetry by the African American poet Phillis Wheatley and by the English anti-slavery poet William Cowper, and anti-slavery speeches and essays from England and America.

The poet William Cowper was christened in St. Peter's, where his father John Cowper was rector.
