The area, originally inhabited by the Lenape Indians, was settled by Thomas Langhorne, an English Quaker preacher, and by Henry Paulin, a Quaker Yeoman, on land grants from William Penn.

Sir William Langhorne, 1st Baronet, is also buried there.

In 1905 he gave his son William Waldorf Astor II and his new daughter-in-law, the former Nancy Langhorne, the Cliveden estate as a wedding present.

He and his brother, William Langhorne, are best known for their English translation of Plutarch's Lives.

William Langhorne ( 1721 – 1772 ), of Plutarch's Lives, but in his day he had some reputation as a poet.

After the death of his first wife, Ann, in 1768, Langhorne went to live with his brother in Folkestone where William was perpetual curate and it was during this time they produced their translation.
