In the late 1950s, a number of interested citizens, including Virginia Senator Mosby G. Perrow, Jr., requested the federal government to change its long-planned route for the interstate highway now known as I-64 between Clifton Forge and Richmond.

A proposed southern route called for the Interstate to follow from Richmond via US-360 and US-460, via Lynchburg to Roanoke and US-220 from Roanoke to Clifton Forge, then west following US-60 into West Virginia.

The new Richmond and Allegheny Railroad offered a water-level route from the Appalachian Mountains just east of West Virginia near Jackson's River Station ( now Clifton Forge ) through the Blue Ridge Mountains at Balcony Falls to Richmond.

A portion of the route in Nutley is municipally maintained while the portion within Clifton is maintained by Passaic County.

The route runs through several communities in the northern part of New Jersey, including Hackettstown, Netcong, Dover, Parsippany-Troy Hills, Wayne, Clifton, Palisades Park, Fort Lee, and Ridgefield Park.

After the exit for Lower Notch Road, the route enters more wooded surroundings, interchanging with Notch Road / Rifle Camp Road before entering Clifton.

Although the route, next to the railway and over the former Clifton colliery site, was chosen to minimize the clearance of occupied land, Yatefield, Olive Mount and Whittlefield Mills, the Barracks, and several hundred more terrace houses had to be demolished.

Analysis by the joint City Council project has determined it unlikely that the centre of West Bridgford will be part of further evolution of the tram line: it will extend south of the Trent to Clifton along the route of the former Great Central line, which forms part of the boundary of Nottingham and West Bridgford.

The route north avoiding the marsh and toll road leads to the now much quieter lanes leading to the village of Clifton, which was at one time the main thoroughfare to Kirkham and the west.

The idea of building a bridge across the Avon Gorge originated in 1753, with a bequest in the will of Bristolian merchant William Vick, who left £ 1, 000 invested with instructions that when the interest had accumulated to £ 10, 000, it should be used for the purpose of building a stone bridge between Clifton Down ( which was in Gloucestershire, outside the City of Bristol, until the 1830s ) and Leigh Woods in Somerset.

Wayne, Woodland Park, Totowa, Little Falls, and Pompton Lakes will join with some of the old 8th district Essex County towns to become part of the new 11th District while Paterson, Clifton, Passaic, Haledon, North Haledon, and Prospect Park will join with Hawthorne in the 9th District.

Based on the results of the 2010 Census, the New Jersey Redistricting Commission has shifted Clifton into the, a change that will take effect in January 2013, based on the results of the November 2012 general elections.

This has since been announced and there will be a second and third line of the tram network which will cover Clifton.

Route 4 Parkway was planned in 1946 as a north – south parkway running from Cape May north to Route 6 ( now U. S. Route 46 ) in Clifton, bridging the gap that existed along Route 4 between Rahway and Paterson ; this proposal became Route 444 ( Garden State Parkway ).

It has two sections, an east – west alignment running from U. S. Route 1 / 9 Truck in Jersey City to Route 21 in Belleville, and a north – south alignment running from the Newark / Belleville to the Nutley / Clifton border, and is one of two state highways in New Jersey to have an intentional discontinuity ( New Jersey Route 440 is the other ).

Clifton Springs is immediately south of both the New York State Thruway ( Interstate 90 ) and New York State Route 96.

In 1867, the Cincinnati, Cumberland Gap, and Charleston Railroad constructed a line through Clifton, which was located just south of New Port on the other side of the Pigeon River.

In 1880 the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway built a station a mile south of Clifton.

Rutherford is bounded by the Passaic River bordering Clifton and Passaic to the west, the Erie Railroad bordering East Rutherford to the north and east, the Hackensack River bordering Secaucus to the southeast, and Berrys Creek, Wall Street West and Rutherford Avenue bordering Lyndhurst to the south and southwest.

Clifton is bounded by the parish of Rawcliffe and Clifton Without to the north, Holgate to the south west, Heworth to the east and Guildhall Ward to the south east.

It is bordered by the suburbs of Holgate, to the east, Clifton, to the north and Woodthorpe to the south.

On the south side are the districts of Stainburn, Derwent Howe, Ashfield, Banklands, Frostoms ( Annie Pit ), Mossbay, Moorclose, Salterbeck, Bridgefoot, Lillyhall, Harrington, High Harrington, Clay Flatts, Kerry Park, Westfield and Great Clifton.

Since the 1960s it has been grade separated from all roads, but it runs more or less at street level for a brief stretch north of Clifton, between the Grasmere and Old Town stations, and from south of the Pleasant Plains station to Tottenville, the end of the line.

On 13 June 1864 a new line was opened from the GWR up to a goods station at Clifton Maybank on the south side of the LSWR station.

It crosses the Beeston Canal and Nottingham-Derby / Loughborough railway line and follows the Clifton Boulevard around the south of Nottingham.
