Uatu was used similarly in the second series ( 1989 – 1998 ) until a point where, in the Fantastic Four comic book, Uatu was punished for destroying another Watcher.

Uatu, often simply known as The Watcher, is a fictional character that appears in comic books published by Marvel Comics.

Robson, a Watcher, telephones Buffy's house from England and reports that Giles may have been killed by a Bringer ( as seen in the ending of " Sleeper ").

An injured Watcher named Robson witnessed Giles about to be decapitated by a Bringer before blacking out.

As a Watcher, Giles is extremely knowledgeable about the creatures that Buffy must face.

Boromir unintentionally disturbed the water by casting a stone into the pool, and the Watcher attacked Frodo as the Fellowship was about to enter Moria.

Giles is, in fact, Buffy's new Watcher, a mentor who will teach her about the demons she must face, as well as supervise her training in weapons and battle strategy.

The Gardener was seen among a group of abstract and near-omnipotent beings ( including Uatu the Watcher, Eternity, the In-Betweener, the Living Tribunal, Lord Chaos, Master Order, and a Celestial ) confronting the Beyonder.

* Rupert Giles — As Buffy's Watcher, and a father-figure and mentor to the entire group, Giles is a founding figure of the Scooby Gang, although his British upbringing resists the lighthearted nickname at first.

Giles has extensive knowledge of demonology and Slayer combat ( including at least a theoretical knowledge of jujutsu and aikido, but excelling at the art of fencing ), mainly due to his training as a Watcher.
