In the 1st century BC, the Boii living in an oppidum of Bratislava ( Slovakia ) minted Biatecs, high-quality coins with inscriptions ( probably the names of kings ) in Latin letters.

The name " Bohemia " derives from the Latin term for the Celtic tribe inhabiting that area, the Boii, who were called Boiohaemum in the early Middle Ages.

The territory around Modena ( Latin: Mutina, Etruscan: Mutna ) was inhabited by the Villanovans in the Iron Age, and later by Ligurian tribes, Etruscans, and the Gaulish Boii ( the settlement itself being Etruscan ).

The Romans called it Boiohaemum, Latin for " the home of the Boii ".

Czech, or Praotec Čech ( pronounced ; Forefather Čech ) also comes under the Latin name Bohemus or German Böhm, for the name is based on a pre-Slavic Celtic designation ( Celtic tribe Boii, Latin form Boiohaemum that was used for Czech lands ).

According to Strabo, writing two centuries after the events, rather than being destroyed by the Romans like their Celtic neighbours, " the Boii were merely driven out of the regions they occupied ; and after migrating to the regions round about the Ister, lived with the Taurisci, and carried on war against the Daci until they perished, tribe and all — and thus they left their country, which was a part of Illyria, to their neighbours as a pasture-ground for sheep.

The " warrior " derivation was adopted by the linguist, Julius Pokorny, who presented it as being from Indo-European * bhei ( ə )-, * bhī -, " hit ;" however, not finding any Celtic names close to it ( except for the Boii ), he adduces examples somewhat more widely from originals further back in time: phohiio-s -, a Venetic personal name ; Boioi, an Illyrian tribe ; Boiōtoi, a Greek tribal name (" the Boeotians ") and a few others.

* baio-warioz: the first component is most plausibly explained as a Germanic version of Boii ; the second part is a common formational morpheme of Germanic tribal names, meaning ' dwellers ', as in Anglo-Saxon-ware ); this combination " Boii-dwellers " may have meant " those who dwell where the Boii formerly dwelt ".

: When, after the action had thus occurred, his own men returned to each general, Scipio could adopt no fixed plan of proceeding, except that he should form his measures from the plans and undertakings of the enemy: and Hannibal, uncertain whether he should pursue the march he had commenced into Italy, or fight with the Roman army which had first presented itself, the arrival of ambassadors from the Boii, and of a petty prince called Magalus, diverted from an immediate engagement ; who, declaring that they would be the guides of his journey and the companions of his dangers, gave it as their opinion, that Italy ought to be attacked with the entire force of the war, his strength having been nowhere previously impaired.

Pliny lists the following Celtic tribes as living in the area: the Aedui and Carnuteni as having treaties with Rome ; the Meldi and Secusiani as having some measure of independence ; and the Boii, Senones, Aulerci ( both the Eburovices and Cenomani ), the Parisii, Tricasses, Andicavi, Viducasses, Bodiocasses, Veneti, Coriosvelites, Diablinti, Rhedones, Turones, and the Atseui.

Caesar related a tradition associating the Celtic tribe of the Volcae to the vast Hercynian forest, though they were more probably to be located in the eastern range of the Mittelgebirge ; yet, Volcae of his time were settled in Moravia, east of the Boii.

Burebista subjugated the Taurisci and the Anarti ; in the process, he confronted the Celtic tribal alliance led by the Boii.

There is an indication that this circumstance was fairly recent ; that is, Posidonius states that the Boii, who were allegedly Celtic, were once there ( as well as in Bohemia which is named for them ).

In the Middle Ages the Bavarians were considered the descendants of the Celtic Boii tribe.

Over the last half of the 20th century, historical and archaeological research has increasingly supported the theory that the remnants of the Celtic Boii were absorbed into the Roman Empire and later intermingled with other Germanic peoples who chose to stay ( or were stationed by the Romans ) in the area.

Strabo confirms that the Boii emigrated from their lands across the Alps and were one of the largest tribes of the Celts.

The archaeological evidence from Bologna and its vicinity contradicts the testimony of Polybius and Livy on some points, who say the Boii expelled the Etruscans and perhaps some were forced to leave.

They were joined by a number of tribal groups from neighbouring regions: the Raurici, the Latobrigi, the Tulingi and a group of Boii, who had besieged Noreia.

The Aedui were granted their wish that the Boii who had accompanied the Helvetii would settle on their own territory as allies in the oppidum Gorgobina.

Their other commander, Publius Cornelius Scipio, returned to Rome, realizing the danger of an invasion of Italy where the tribes of the Boii and Insubres were already in revolt.

In the 2nd century BC, many of the Boii tribe were pushed north across the Alps out of northern Italy by the Romans.

On its basis, Lengyel and Radan ( 1980 ), Hoddinott ( 1981 ) and Mountain ( 1998 ) consider that the Geto-Dacians inhabited both sides of the Tisza river before the rise of the Celtic Boii and again after the latter were defeated by the Dacians.

These Lingones were part of a wave of Celtic tribes that included the Boii and Senones ( Polybius, Histories ii. 17 ).

As only small numbers of Boii were left after the battle, the Aedui were obliging.

Very likely they had been in part the Boii, who were a strong force on the Danube until they encountered the Marcomanni and Quadi.

The Volcae were highly influential in Moravia, and together with the Boii and the Cotini and other Danubian tribes, they controlled a highly active network of trade routes connected to the Mediterranean and the German lands.

At some undetermined time when the Carthaginians were between the Pyrenees and the Rhone they and the Boii made contact and promised mutual assistance.

At that time the Helvetii were on the right bank of the Rhine south of the Main, with the Boii further down the Danube.

Later in their brief and sanguinary course across Europe, the Cimbri were ruled by Boiorix, a Celtic name, " King of the Boii.

Contemporary derived words include Boiorix (" king of the Boii ", one of the chieftains of the Cimbri ) and Boiodurum (" gate / fort of the Boii ", modern Passau ) in Germany.

After several unsuccessful battles with the Boii and other Celtic tribes, they appeared ca 113 BC in Noricum, where they invaded the lands of one of Rome's allies, the Taurisci.

The known Cimbri chiefs have names that look Celtic, including Boiorix ( which may mean " King of the Boii " or, more literally, " King of Strikers "), Gaesorix ( which means " Spear King "), and Lugius ( which may be named after the Celtic god Lugus ), although this may not mean that they are Celtic as the elements could work in Germanic ( compare the name of the Vandalic king Gaiseric, which is likely identical to Gaesorix ).
