In March 1858, a boy named David Linklater was digging at Muckle Brae, near the Sandwick parish church, when he came across a few pieces of silver lying in the earth.

Benito Juárez (; 21 March 1806 – 18 July 1872 ) born Benito Pablo Juárez García, was a Mexican lawyer and politician of Zapotec origin from Oaxaca who served five terms as president of Mexico: 1858 – 1861 as interim, then 1861 – 1865, 1865 – 1867, 1867 – 1871 and 1871 – 1872 as constitutional president.

Georg Simmel ( March 1, 1858 – September 28, 1918 ) was a major German sociologist, philosopher, and critic.

Adolph Simon Ochs ( March 12, 1858 – April 8, 1935 ) was an American newspaper publisher and former owner of The New York Times and The Chattanooga Times ( now the Chattanooga Times Free Press ).

This branch was completed no later than March 8, 1858 and the town grew out of a need for railroad workers to man the terminal and switching station.
