On the afternoon of May 9, Benedict Arnold quite unexpectedly arrived on the scene.

While largely accurate, it notably omits Benedict Arnold from the capture of Ticonderoga, and Seth Warner as the leader of the Green Mountain Boys.

His great grandfather, Thomas Hopkins, was an original settler of Providence, sailing from England in 1635 with his first cousin, Benedict Arnold, who became the first governor of the Rhode Island colony under the Royal Charter of 1663.

In 1727 Lord Baltimore appointed his brother, Benedict Leonard Calvert, governor of the colony, replacing his cousin Captain Calvert.

As silly as it may sound in retrospect, at the time the governor publicly theorized that the monks of St. Leo Abbey near Tampa ( many of whom were either German-Americans or German immigrants ) were planning to arm Florida's African American community for a popular revolt in favor of Kaiser Wilhelm II, after which Pope Benedict XV ( a well documented pacifist, who was Italian, not German ) would take over Florida and move the Holy See to nearby San Antonio and close all of the Protestant churches.

Though not re-elected in 1676, he was elected to a final term as governor of the colony in 1678 following the death of Governor Benedict Arnold.

However, the experience of the venerated elders of the colony was still sought, so in 1677 Benedict Arnold was elected governor, and upon his death a year later, Coddington was elected to his final term as governor.

In 1663 the colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations received its Royal Charter and Benedict Arnold ( 1615 – 1678 ) was elected its first Governor at Newport.
