Rabbi David Nieto ( 1654 – 1728 ) was the haham of the Spanish and Portuguese Jewish community in London.

Most of its authors were for Copernicus, although David Nieto and Tobias Cohn were exceptions.

In 1698 Rabbi David Nieto took spiritual charge of a congregation of Spanish and Portuguese Jews ( also called Sephardim ) who met in a small synagogue in Creechurch Lane.

He was acquainted with the Copernican system, but preferred that of Ptolemy, while as late as 1714 David Nieto of London still stood out against the Copernican system.

At age 6 he was transferred to the household of David Cohen de Léon, a financier of Sephardic origins who was a friend of Leopold II.

The accepted rules of Hebrew grammar, including the current Sephardic pronunciation, were laid down in medieval Spain by grammarians such as Judah ben David Hayyuj and Jonah ibn Janah.

In 1846, Levy officially changed his name to David Levy Yulee ( adding his father's Sephardic surname ).
