1875 Canadian Illustrated News cartoon shows Mackenzie the Mason and Governor General Lord Dufferin the Overseer In Canada, Mackenzie continued his career as a stonemason, building many structures that still stand today.

When the Macdonald government fell due to the Pacific scandal in 1873, the Governor General, Lord Dufferin, called upon Mackenzie, who had been chosen as the leader of the Liberal Party a few months earlier, to form a new government.

Lord Dufferin, the current Governor General, expressed early misgivings about a stonemason taking over government.

* 1849 – The Governor General of Canada, Lord Elgin, signs the Rebellion Losses Bill, outraging Montreal's English population and triggering the Montreal Riots.

* Lord Beginner's song " General Election " was inspired by Attlee's victory in the 1950 British general election.

The Commission heard evidence from Sir Matthew Nathan, Augustine Birrell, Lord Wimborne, Sir Neville Chamberlain ( Inspector-General of the Royal Irish Constabulary ), General Lovick Friend, Major Ivor Price of Military Intelligence and others.

Other early films include The Lineup, The Misfits, The Magnificent Seven ( he portrayed the Mexican bandit Calvera ), Lord Jim as the General, a comic role in How to Steal a Million ( the latter two with Peter O ' Toole ), and perhaps most famously, as Tuco ( the ' Ugly ') in Sergio Leone's The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

He served both as Attorney General and Lord Chancellor of England.

Various Governors-General had previously served as governors of an Australian state or colony: Lord Hopetoun ( Victoria 1889 – 95 ); Lord Tennyson ( South Australia 1899 – 1902 ); Lord Gowrie ( South Australia 1928 – 34 ; and New South Wales 1935 – 36 ); Major General Michael Jeffery ( Western Australia 1993 – 2000 ); Quentin Bryce ( Queensland 2003 – 08 ).

In Canada, a similar situation took place in 1925 wherein Governor General Lord Byng of Vimy appointed Arthur Meighen after William Lyon Mackenzie King refused to resign the premiership ( known as the King-Byng Affair ).

In 1888, the new Governor General of Canada, Lord Stanley of Preston, whose sons and daughter had become hockey enthusiasts, attended the Montreal Winter Carnival tournament and was impressed with the hockey spectacle.

Lord Goldsmith, the then Attorney General, then pressed forward with the Fraud ( Trials Without a Jury ) Bill in Parliament, which sought to abolish jury trials in major criminal fraud trials.

* 1893 – Former Governor General Lord Stanley pledges to donate a silver challenge cup, later named after him, as an award for the best hockey team in Canada ; originally presented to amateur champions, the Stanley Cup has been awarded to the top pro team since 1910, and since 1926, only to National Hockey League teams.

* 1781 – American Revolutionary War: British General Lord Charles Cornwallis surrenders at the Siege of Yorktown.

In 1905 the position was given some official recognition when the " Prime Minister " was named in the order of precedence, outranked, among non-royals, only by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York, the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland and the Lord Chancellor.

The Governor General, Lord Elgin, had serious misgivings about the bill but nonetheless assented to it despite demands from the Tories that he refuse to do so.

The First Minister, the Ministers ( but not junior ministers ), the Lord Advocate and Solicitor General are the Members of the ' Scottish Executive ', as set out in the Scotland Act 1998.

The paintings on the west side are by John Trumbull: Declaration of Independence, Surrender of General Burgoyne, Surrender of Lord Cornwallis, and General George Washington Resigning His Commission.

In 1926 King advised the Governor General, Lord Byng, to dissolve Parliament and call another election, but Byng refused, the only time in Canadian history that the Governor General has exercised such a power.

Others, also basing their claims on passages of his diaries, have suggested that King was in love with Lord Tweedsmuir, whom he had chosen for appointment as Governor General in 1935.

* July 24 – Governor General Lord Dorchester, by proclamation issued from the Chateau St. Louis in Quebec City, divides the British Province of Quebec into five Districts, namely: Gaspé, Nassau, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, and Hesse.

But Morgan did not leave before he had written a letter to a William Pickman in Salem, Massachusetts, apparently an acquaintance, praising Washington and saying that the slanders propagated about him were `` opposed by the general current of the people to exalt General Gates at the expense of General Washington was injurious to the latter.

But what the elements could not do was seriously threatened when Brigadier General William E. ( Grumble ) Jones reached Philippi while on the famous Jones-Imboden raid in May, 1863.

William Joseph Slim, First Viscount Slim, former Governor General of Australia, was the principal British commander in the field during the Burma War.

* 1776 – The Battle of Long Island: in what is now Brooklyn, New York, British forces under General William Howe defeat Americans under General George Washington.

* 1865 – American Civil War: Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston surrenders his army to General William Tecumseh Sherman at the Bennett Place near Durham, North Carolina.

* 1812 – War of 1812: American General William Hull surrenders Fort Detroit without a fight to the British Army.

On March 5, 1868, the impeachment trial began in the Senate and lasted almost three months ; Reps. George S. Boutwell, Ben Butler and Thaddeus Stevens acted as managers ( prosecutors ) for the House and William M. Evarts, Benjamin R. Curtis and Attorney General Henry Stanberry served as Johnson's counsel ; Chief Justice Chase served as presiding judge.

Stanberry resigned and Johnson replaced him with William M. Evarts as Attorney General.

* 1864 – During the American Civil War, Union forces led by General William T. Sherman launch an assault on Atlanta, Georgia.

* 1967 – Vietnam War: American General William Westmoreland says in a news conference that the enemy had " gained support in the United States that gives him hope that he can win politically that which he cannot win militarily.

Major General William Rupertus, USMC — commander of 1st Marine Division — predicted the island would be secured within four days.

" In August 1777, General Sir William Howe led a British army through Delaware on his way to a victory at the Battle of Brandywine and capture of the city of Philadelphia.

* 1965 – Vietnam War: General William Westmoreland sends U. S. Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara a request for 243, 000 more men by the end of 1966.

A committee that was headed by psychiatrist Brigadier General William C. Menninger developed a new classification scheme called Medical 203 that was issued in 1943 as a War Department Technical Bulletin under the auspices of the Office of the Surgeon General.

By November the Deputy General Minister and President, William Howland, suggested that the committee's staff consultant and chairperson agree on a specific proposal and bring it back to the committee: that meant Robert L. Friedly of the Office of Interpretation and Ronald E. Osborn.

Retired Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General John Shalikashvili and former Senator and Secretary of Defense William Cohen opposed the policy in January 2007: " I now believe that if gay men and lesbians served openly in the United States military, they would not undermine the efficacy of the armed forces " Shalikashvili wrote.

* 1864 – American Civil War: Sherman's March to the Sea – Major General William Tecumseh Sherman's Union Army troops reach the outer Confederate defenses of Savannah, Georgia.

* 1864 – Savannah, Georgia falls to General William Tecumseh Sherman, concluding his " March to the Sea ".

Air Force majors ; Air Force Major Rudolf Anderson, the U-2 pilot shot down during the Cuban Missile Crisis ; director Frank Capra, decorated in 1945 as an Army colonel ; actor James Stewart, decorated in 1945 as an Army Air Forces colonel ( later Air Force Brigadier General ); Col. Wendell Fertig, who led Filipino guerrillas behind Japanese lines ; Col. ( later Major General ) John K. Singlaub, who led partisan forces in the Korean War ; and Maj. Maude C. Davison, who led the " Angels of Bataan and Corregidor " during their imprisonment by the Japanese, and Colonel William S. Taylor, Program Manager Multiple Launch Rocket System.
